dirtman13 01-14-08, 05:28 PM I really enjoy photography and taking pictures of landscapes, macros, and historic relics, just to name a few. I was hoping that others that enjoy this hobby could show off some pictures of what they like to photograph. I’ll start with a few of my favorites.

i am using a canon 10D
the camera body is dated a bit, but the lenses is where it's at.
i am shooting with:
canon 24-70 F2.8 L
canon 100-400 L
canon 100mm f2.8 macro
sigma 70-200 f2.8
these are all pretty nice lenses.

NAILER341 01-14-08, 09:50 PM Hey Erik...where was this one taken??? I wanna go there!
this is in the Huntington Lake area.
it is about 4.5 miles in, and 9000' up. there are 2 ways to get there... by mule or on foot.
http://dana30.com/photogallery/huntington%2006/tn_IMG_4534.JPG
my family goes up there once a year and ventures in to some hot pools, and some good trout fishing.
there are more pictures at the bottom of this link.
http://dana30.com/photogallery/huntington%2006/huntington%2006.htm
here is a link to the area, and how the fancy people get in to this area.
we do it on foot, but depending on the shape of your wallet, there are other ways to get in and experience the hot pools, and ponds. it is pretty far out there.
http://www.muirtrailranch.com/about-us.html
you have to take a ferry across a lake before you can even begin the hike. this keeps out the riff raff. :D

Sure... the rubber stamp tool is your friend!
I use "GIMP" (GNU Image Manipulation Program) which is the open source/free, but crappy version of Photoshop. With enough work, it can do everything Photoshop can do. The big difference is that Photoshop makes tons of advanced features easy to do.

George
Britain 01-20-08, 11:26 AM George looks like Jan 31 they will start asking for the passport. At that time its not mandatory. They will pass out info on how to get one and why. Starting June it will be mandatory I think. I'll check on that.

It got very humid inside during her trip to the Netherlands. Sometimes you can see small spots of something growing in the lower left corner of the pictures.
Indeed it will need a macro feature. I just need one that captures the vibrant colors at least as well as this camera. It's an Olympus 3.2MP D-535. I only know a couple of things about cameras: Lens Zoom is better than digital zoom, and mega pixels mean something about how many dots it captures per inch or centimeter or something like that. Other than that...I'm going completely off price.

If your looking at just a regular digital camera I would suggest you check out the Kodak Easy Share line. They are nice cameras for the price. The pictures on my original post on this thread were taken with one. Currently I'm using a Sony but I'm also beginning to look at the SLR cameras.

This last pic was taken from around 75 ft. and I was moving, that's why its fuzzy. All these cameras do very well and for the money are all good choices. The Kodak Easy Share and Canon Sure shot are great starter cameras; the higher end entry level stuff like the Rebel are more expensive. But Barb will do well with any of these; she has a great eye for pictures.

Kurt, were the first 3 shots with your Rebel? I'm still researching but I think I'm down to either the Rebel XTi or the Olympus EVOLT E-510.
Oh, and heres another shot.

Nice! That will be a great starter kit for her. First thing; get some 2,3 or 4 GB cards. I'm pretty sure yours uses the same type (SD compact flash) as mine. 1GB cards won't last very long (fill up too fast) when you're shooting for effect (raw image)... Maybe a tripod, and she's got a sweet little set up.

Thanks for the link. I have seen that one along with out about 500 others. :rolleyes:I've been researching for about 3 weeks (my head hurts) and finally decided on the e-510. There are a lot of good choices out there. I think I'll be happy with it. The one thing that seems to be a consistent gripe is the 3 AF points. I'm not to worried about that as I will not be using AF to often.
By the way great shots.:thumbs_up

Very nice choice. A lot of good reviews for the Rebel. The Rebel XTi 400d was my second choice. She'll be very happy with that camera.
USMC 0369 03-04-08, 07:42 PM how much of a difference am I going to see between 8mp and 10mp?

But what did I sacrifice?

You won’t notice a difference unless you’re planning on printing the images on large media bigger then 11x14. On of the biggest misconceptions when people go buy a camera is that they need the most mega pixels. This should not be the main reason you buy a camera IMO. For the average Joe 5 mega pixels is sufficient. This will give you great quality pictures for your 4x6, 5x7, and Internet posting pictures. The larger the prints the more your picture will lose it’s sharpness so you need to increase the mega pixels to regain the sharpness. You will be very happy with your choice. 8-mega pixel is plenty and you really can’t go wrong with a Canon. I bought a 10-mega pixel because I do plan on blowing up and framing some of my quality shots.
This explains it better then I can

Nick,
I use the Rebel XT. It's perfect for what I do, and it's extremely versitile. I'm still learning how to use all the features. Barb will be very happy. Get some more filters; they really make a difference. And I routinely enlarge photos to 11x14 and even larger with 8-mega pixels. No prob.

I'm writing this to ask...
Good quality macro lens and external flash for the Rebel XT? Barb takes a ton of macro pictures and the lens that came with it either doesn't take them OR she just hasn't figured out how just yet... The built in flash washes out the pictures, not sure how to fix that yet either.
Kurt! bring your brain to IDTT.

The reason your washing out the shot is that it's over exposed. The flash is not shutting down quick enough when your that close to the subject. Try a smaller aperture or put a filter on the flash. It can be difficult to do macro with the built in flash. Most macro guys use the twin flash or flash ring. I have not heard good things about the ring.

Nick,
No prob. If she's using the 14/50mm lens that came with the camera it's not a macro lens. The flash has settings for close up shots, delays, etc. I'll show her all that at IDTT, or she can call me if she doesn't want to wiat that long. I'll pm my #.

Valley of Fire State Park, its NE of Las Vegas south of the Logandale 4wd area.

No, no filter. I did adjust the color though. My camera is a cheapie and completely washed out all of the photo's I took that day. I adjusted the color to what is close to actual, but kinda screwed up the clouds and sky.
dirtman13 03-11-08, 08:00 AM This is one of the first pictures I took with my new Olympus E-510. It was taken on the roof of my building looking towards Belmont Shores and Huntington Beach. First impressions are I really like this camera. Still trying to learn all the features and what is the best set up. I also need to get a macro lens and I’ll be set.

Kurt, Barb's being stubborn, as usual. She likes to learn things on her own. but I will ensure the camera comes to IDTT! Today, she figured out how to shut off the flash, but not the delay or up close shots.
This is for everyone: When I purchased this camera, I found out at the last minute that the lens that came with it was PLASTIC! I have no idea if that's good or bad, but I upgraded to a glass lens. The reason I'm asking you guys is because you know better than I do what a good macro & zoom lens would be. I'd like to get them delivered before IDTT (times ticking) so any help please!! Also, macro flash?
THANKS for the help! Ya'll Rock.

For the price this is a HELL of a good lens. Comparble Canon lenses of this typpe are $600+ I use this same lens with fantastic results.

There is debate about plastic lenses. Most pros will steer clear of them, I don't use them because they supposedly scratch way easier (I don't know for sure, but why find out)? and don't refract light as well as glass. Cost-wise, I don't see that big a difference, so I stay with the glass lenses.

did you take their course?
dirtman13 03-12-08, 07:49 AM Nick, Check out this site for some good reading on macro photography. http://homepages.tig.com.au/~parsog/photo/macro.html I would suggest a high mm lens that will give Barb two benefits. 1. Able to take shots at a further distance which, is good for insects and such and 2. Will help with the overexposure from the flash. I just purchased a 70mm-300mm with a macro extension tube. This also gives you the ability to use some of your lenses as macro lenses. With an extension tube and a good lens you can some times achieve closer then 1:1. And, is much cheaper way to go.

Awesome! Thanks for the information. I (we) have a LOT to learn about this SLR business. I appreciate the less expensive way to go info too.
Hope this helps solve her dilema(s).
dirtman13 03-13-08, 05:36 PM This was taken with a 70mm-300mm lens and an extension tube. I was about 3 ft away so you can see that shooting insects and such can be done without getting so close that you scare them away.

Nick,
Digital cameras save the image information. If you want to get this info for a photo someone else shot, it may be available on the original site where it is posted, but more than likely you have to contact that person. A good source of photo formatting info are the online photography sites, where people post for photo contests and such. Most contests ask for image info, so you can look at the pics that you like and pull up the info to see how it's shot.

Kevin,
Love the tank! You have some great looking coral! We only have a couple of those blue-green chromies like you've got, some star polyp coral (not doing well the last couple weeks) and a diamond goby which we love!
Taking good pictures of a tank isn't easy. I tried and tried and only got the couple seen here:

Dezertdog 04-15-08, 07:14 PM Awesome tank, I used to have one years ago. But it never looked that good. Could'nt give it the care it needed.
It all died off except one clown fish.
I had that fish for 17 years before it finally died.
I had no idea they lived that long.

rat patrol 05-10-08, 10:34 PM Hey Chuck,
Here you go man. I came across this beauty while in Parker, AZ. for a freinds wedding. HE was not as cooperative as the Mojave Green, but still got some good pics. THis guy is about 3" long. Had to have just shed; the markings were stunning. All together I counted 15-16 snakes today.

Malachi 05-12-08, 10:52 PM Hey Rat! I did some homework on this snake and it appears that you captured pics of a young (2 to 3 yr-old) Western DiamondBack Rattlesnake. Good thing that you just took pics. They tend to stand their ground when threatened according to the Desert USA site.

Your research is correct. He did stand his ground; a truck just ran over him (not hit him, just rolled over him) and he was pretty pissed about it. The fact that I was trying to take pics of him didn't make him any happier. But this is the species I have caught more of than any other. When they're not upset or feeling threatened they can actually be handled fairly well. I've not seen the facial markings quite so pronounced; damn purty snake.

dirtman13 05-22-08, 07:23 AM Kurt, I'm surprised you didn't get any shots when the fog that rolled in Monday. The harbor look really cool. You could barely see the water below the lighthouse and would have been a great shot. Unfortunately I couldn't get over there.

dirtman13 07-06-08, 10:07 AM What would be the best settings for taking fireworks pictures? anyone? Rebel-XT with sorta crappy lens.
Fireworks are tricky. Check the settings on your camera. I would be surprised if it didn't have a setting for fireworks. Most digitals do. If not put the camera in manual mode, use a small aperture number(large opening) and then set a slow shutter speed. You will need to experiment with the speed but I think 1/60 would be a good starting point.
Oh yea....don't forget a tripod!!
jkcrazyjim2 07-10-08, 06:05 PM What would be the best settings for taking fireworks pictures? anyone? Rebel-XT with sorta crappy lens.
Here's some basic settings for you:
-Tripod
-time exposure: 2-4 seconds
-aperture: f/8 - f/16
-IOS: 100-500

dirtman13 07-30-08, 09:02 PM Went back packing out of Devil's Postpile by Mammoth this last weekend. Went to Rosalie Lake. We were supposed to do alot more, but one of the guy's that went, his knee was giving out on him. So we stayed a little longer at Rosalie Lake and went back. It was a nice three day trip. Here's some pictures from the point n shoot camera.

Thanks dirtman. I would of liked to take my 40D with the wide angle, but my backpack already weighed too much. Maybe next time.
rat patrol 08-03-08, 10:15 PM After a month of stalking this prick, I finally got him to stand still long enough to get some quick shots of him. We've had a war going on since I moved down here: he likes to hang out by the boat in the early morning and scare the bejezzus out of me on my way to the showers. I follow him around trying to get clear shots of him. I think he just gave up! He's about 3.5 feet tall.

That's a Tarantula Hawk. You can get as close to them as you want and they won't care as long as you don't try to pick them up.
great88 08-06-08, 10:58 PM Jim,
I just had a little a flash back from Saturday cause Kurt (Rat Patrol) stopped in the middle of the trail on Cleghorn to watch a hornet / wasp that was digging and throwing dirt across the trail. Too funny..

Yeah, that was Kurt's picture from Cleghorn. I watched one of these Tarantula Hawks for about a half hour at a School I was working at, just flying back and forth, then landing in the dirt. I didn't know what it was exactly until I looked it up on the internet.
