View Full Version : powertrax problem
NAILER341 02-15-04, 01:06 PM http://www.drivetrain.com/guide17.jpg
has anyone broken or damaged a powertrax no slip? i have one of these in my 8.8, and have somehow damaged it. for some reason the drivers side wheel is no longer locked in. i opened up the dif cover, and can see that the teeth are not enguaging.
from the outside the locker appears to be fine... there are no cracks or anything on it. the only thing i can think of that happened to it. the problem is... i cant get the dam thing out of the carrier! on the passenger side, i can turn the teeth to allign them, on the drivers side the teeth dont mesh like they should, and that 1/16" of an inch or so that they are not meshing is not allowing me the clearance to get the other half of the locker out.
has any one experienced this before?
the picture shows the part that i think is damaged. does any one have any suggestions here?!
when this was installed, it worked as it should, and met all the criteria of the pre tests for proper installation.
tjTerry 02-15-04, 08:22 PM Erik,
When my locker went bad it rounded the edges of the teeth and would no longer hold. If the teeth have damaged pieces hanging over into the areas they mesh you cant get the clearance needed to slide the first side out. Can you get the axles out? Then pull the ring gear and carrier as a single unit?
NAILER341 02-15-04, 08:27 PM no. the way this locker is installed into the 8.8, you install the drivers side axle and c clip, then basicly cover it up with the passenger sid of the locker. then the passenger c c lip drops in.
so what it boils down to is i cant get the drivers side axle out because the locker cant come apart due to the clearance problems you described.
lol! what a pain in the ass! i have been out there for hours today. i am very frustrated with this thing. i think i'm going to have to cut the sob out with my grinder, and try not to wreck the ring gear, and carrier. lol!

i cant really afford it right now, but this arb is looking pretty good to me right now.
i have been waiting for this "ricks wash" run for weeks.... now things are getting desperate.
tjTerry 02-15-04, 08:33 PM You want to borrow my torch wrench?

i have never heard of one of those... what the hel is that?!:D
will it cut through whatever this locker is made of?
tjTerry 02-15-04, 08:36 PM Cutting Torch
NAILER341 02-15-04, 08:38 PM oh.. lol. never heard it referred to as that. i have a torch. do you think it will cut that "zytanium"? or whatever those lockers are made of?
tjTerry 02-15-04, 08:42 PM I do not know, but it would sure make a mess
NAILER341 02-15-04, 08:46 PM i was thinking if i cut the pins off of it, it might come out. i just dont know yet. i'm going to call powertrax on tues and see what they say. maybe they have some suggestions. lol i dont know if they will warrantee a torched out locker.
i have to get it out one way or another though.
NAILER341 02-16-04, 06:13 PM well, the powertrax is coming out, and an arb is going in. i dont want to ever have to go through this again ;)
lol
as things develop i'll start a new thread for the arb.

I think you'll like it. you gonna spring for the ARB comp or run it off your OBA?

i still have the viair compressor collecting dust, so i might just use that solely for the arb.
i am interested to know how you have yours set up. do you have a tank? [i dont think so]
can you explain your system to me? :D

o.k., here's what I know on this subject...
arb lockers like to see a constant psi of 85 to 105 to stay engauged. under no circumstances do they like anything over 110.
to create this air pressure I hooked up my Viair to a 2.5 gal tank. The compressor is activated by an 85-105 psi pressure switch on the system. I then connected a CH mini regulator to the 2.5 gal tank, set it to 90psi and hooked up the solenoids off the regulator. I have a saftey valve on the tank that I think is close to 110.
from the solenoids you run your blue line to the diff.
to the solenoids you run switched power from your dash.
that's really all there is to it.
Dukes69 02-18-04, 03:55 PM so whats going on with this? Are you going to be ready for this weekend? :D
NAILER341 02-18-04, 04:06 PM i have the arb locker in my posession, as well as the installation kit. i will prep the air lines from the york to accept the air locker solenoid today if the rain lets up enough. i am dropping it off at jims shop tomorrow afternoon for a friday install. so things are still very up in the air. i think it mostly depends on how big of a pain in the ass it is for jim to get the damaged no-slip out of there. hopefully it will be ready friday evening. ;) which still leaves a bit of a break in for the gears.. hell, i dont know. things are very tight ;)
Dukes69 02-18-04, 04:09 PM Eff the rain
Get on it!!!
codfish 02-18-04, 04:11 PM oh bummer dooood you broke a powertrax?! those are sopposed to be really tough!
NAILER341 02-18-04, 04:17 PM i'll get it done before i go... rain or no rain. i have all of the parts for the connection.. i just have to put them on the jeep. shouldnt take more than 20 minutes ;)
i am debating running another small coalescing filter before the arb. do you think it is needed? i already have very little oil in my air from the york. but i do have another small filter in my posession.
http://www.jeepaholics.com/tech/oba2/images/OBA_arb.gif
it will be set up something similar to this.
Dukes69 02-18-04, 04:20 PM I'd run another one, just to be safe. I hear ARB's really dont like oil.
NAILER341 02-18-04, 04:22 PM so, i'll just tee off of the main line, attatch the mini-coalescing filter, then the regulator, and tie the solenoid to that ;)
piece of cake!
is it still raining?!

No!!:D
Dukes69 02-18-04, 04:26 PM Oh, think about this. If there is a leak in a line somewhere, you'll have to keep the york on and cycling to keep the psi up. I dont know if the york is up to that . . . or is it?
tjTerry 02-18-04, 05:49 PM Nice CAD work Nailer.
I am going to have to figure how to get air to my new ARB too. My compressor is elec with on/off switch and an preasure relief valve. I need to find a 12volt preasure switch and install. Mine is currently designed just to air up tires, so there was no need to keep a constant preasure.
Does anyone have a idea where to get a 12v preasure switch @ 100psi?
Thanks
T
igofshn 02-18-04, 06:22 PM You should be able to get it from Grainger or Kilby.
NAILER341 02-18-04, 07:29 PM you can get an adjustable pressure switch. i'm sure kilby has one of those.
i cant take credit for the cad work on that drawing. found it on the net. ;)
i do cad... but that isnt mine
tjTerry 02-19-04, 09:01 PM I have a Grainger catalog at the office. I will check it out . Where do I find Kilby?

NAILER341 02-20-04, 08:35 PM www.jcfabanddesign came through for me in a pinch. i am up and running again with an arb air locker. THANK YOU! i will be posting some pics of the powertrax no slip when i get a chance to take them. it was pretty buggered up, but jim was able to get it out without the torch :D
AWESOME!! Rock on Jimmy da man!!!!

Was alot of fun getting that thing out of there , But don't let this discourage anyone from buying this locker it is a good alternative to budget minded locker upgrade .
NAILER341 02-22-04, 02:27 PM well, here are a few pictures of the damaged powertrax no slip.

the damage is strange, and appears minor, but it made it hell to remove, and quit functioning.
the newly installed arb worked flawlessly. sweet! and street manners are like stock with the arb disenguaged... i love it!
