View Full Version : Hot, Hot , Hot.
paulhead 06-02-04, 06:32 PM Changed the fan clutch, thermostat, rodded a radiator that did'nt need it, it's been suggested to take out the thermostat. Could the water pump be bad with no visible signs? Runs good for 20-30 minutes then gets hot.88 4.2L carburated.

Yes. You cant see any of the working mess. Changine the water pump is cheaper then fixing a trashed motor from overheating. I'm not sure about 4.2's but the 4.0's need to run around 210 for it to be efficient and run properly. Good luck. :8
paulhead 06-07-04, 01:37 AM So what's the deal. After it overheated I let it cool for an hour. So I pop off the cap ,went to start it and it was at 210*. Then after a few minutes went up to 250 but it was'nt boiling over?

boiling over? is 250 even close to hot enough to boil rad fluid? you are using radiator fluid right in a 50/50 mix or whatever, not just water?
paulhead 06-07-04, 01:35 PM Yea, 50/50. I'm getting a new sending unit this afternoon, I think thats the problem.
How old is the water pump?

I don't know. I actually have an 83 engine with a 90 head. As far as see I am getting fluid flow.
Replace the pump, that's the only thing left!
paulhead 06-08-04, 07:21 PM Yea Rick, that would've been my next step . But I thought to change the sending unit just to see what would happen. Sure enough, drove it all around for over 40 mins, on street, freeway, and temp did'nt budge past 207*. I am a happy camper :D . Thanx guys.
JeepJunkie 06-08-04, 07:42 PM Glad ya fixed that one :P
Right on, good deal. Glad you found it.
