View Full Version : tube fenders
tonkadave 07-09-04, 01:52 PM I'm working on some tube frnder for my wrangler/cj (tonka) I have the tubeing bent and the rest of the frames made working on the skin now I'n gonna be useing 14ga. sheet metal. I made them a little bigger than most well wider I'd say. These are gonne be made from scratch no cutting of the oringinal femders at all. Pic to come real soon.
JeepJunkie 07-09-04, 04:04 PM sounds pretty cool. Lets see some pics, i dont have the patience to wait for "soon" i need em now :D
tonkadave 07-13-04, 09:23 AM Ok heres some pic's I'm still working on them I just started skining them. I used 1 inch tubeing and 1 inch angle iron for the top and back for the mounting areas and 1 1/2 flat stock for the front part along the grill for mounting well here are the pic's there will be more to come.

JeepGal 07-13-04, 11:43 AM VERY COOL!
I really like the way those are turning out:)
Tam :)
TommyJeep 07-13-04, 11:53 AM Super wide for a west coast wheeler! Are you just based in Fort Irwin, but from the east? Nice fabrication though :)
tonkadave 07-13-04, 12:26 PM Yep I'm based here at Ft Irwin till dec. then going to Irac. But original from Mi. I have to make the fender wider to cover the tires at least the same amount the oringaly did which was 16 inches. I have full size axles under my jeep if i did the standard type tube fender the WHOLE tire would be out side the jeep. :) the police don't like that for some reason???
TommyJeep 07-13-04, 03:32 PM I can't speak for Mi laws, but here in CA there's no law regarding the front tires being covered, only the rear tires. Just an FYI.
goodtimes 07-13-04, 05:12 PM 'yall need to move to AZ. Here, trucks need to have their tires covered, cars and utility vehicles don't.
TommyJeep 07-13-04, 08:21 PM Well Goodtimes, today it was 104 degrees here and that's warm enough! :D
Those look good! I wanna learn how to weld!!!
goodtimes 07-13-04, 10:33 PM Well Goodtimes, today it was 104 degrees here and that's warm enough! :D
That is hotter than it was here! If your going to put up with the heat anyway, may as well have some cool-ass loopholes in the laws to go with it! :D
tonkadave 07-14-04, 08:36 AM it was like 135 in Irac the other day and I'll be the in Dec.
Dave,
Looking good. I'm glad you have a new project. Too bad I can't maintain my duties as "shop boy".
I understand about the requirement for the width of the fenders, but, they look really wide. I'll wait for the final picture before I say yea or nea.
Later bro!
JC
So how's the project coming? What'd up?
Been meaning to tell you something, not related to this post, but you don't receive public Jeep recognition in a modified XJ compared to a modified CJ. Leads me to find a way to keep the CJ in the family. However, the bad end of that thought is if that happened, I may not have a family anymore. Hmmmm, decisions!
Later bro!

tonkadave 09-12-04, 03:40 PM OK I'm finialy getting around to finishing my tube fenders they should be done by the end of the day and I'll post some pic.s I've just been so busy at work and getting ready to deploy to Irac that I haven't had much time. So for the one's waiting to see the finished product hang in there :)
It's about DAMN time! :)
Maybe if you had the famous "Shop Boy" packing cold beer, things would have moved a little faster.
I'll give you a call soon. Need to tell you about Paragon and the XJ.

tonkadave 09-13-04, 03:37 PM Ok there done! painted and mounted, I sprayed a rubberized undercoating on the under side go figure :) and then painted the top side now the only problem is the frender are a bright color compared to the rest of the sun faded body but given time here in the desert it won't be long before they match. here in the link same as before I just added the latest pic.s

paulhead 10-09-04, 11:15 PM Looks sweet , I definately want to learn how to do that. :hijack:
I did my first welding today  . I had to weld some spring hangers on my jeep today, well actually my friend did it for me, but I messed around on some scrap and he showed me the basics. I got the basic feel of it and really see my self getting a welder in the future. ;)
Looks awesome! I wish I could weld some stuff like that. Someday though. Good luck in Iraq. You'll be in our thoughts. STAY SAFE!!!! :gun:
