Hello guys.... I finaly found a group of trailers from Cali... I have been browsing the net for quite sometime now to find a group of Cali trailers... well for right now... I'm in the military and currently stationed in Japan but will be transfering to San Diego in a couple of months... I just bought a '03 Jeep Wrangler Sport Patriot blue w/ 30"s tire package that I'm going to pick-up as soon as I get there :p... anyway... I'm new to the 4 wheel world and would like to learn and get better at it... and I think that you guys are the right people that can show me that... sorry for the novel and I hope that I see some of you guys in a couple of months.

John -

Welcome to the site! I met alot of the people on the site earlier this year - and my Jeep went from stock with 31's to now having new bumpers, a lift, a locker and maybe 33's on the way! There's a number of trails that I did with 31's including Miller Jeep Trail. For each run we post what the requirements are for your Jeep, so pay attention to that and we'll answer any questions you have.

I'm sure JeepGal will be the first to tear off your endcaps!!
:P We look forward to building up your new Jeep!

Sarah

Hey John...Just to clarify...

End Caps ARE NOT upgrades. They are DOWNGRADES. If you have them on your Jeep, people will KNOW that you dont wheel it. :)

That said...wheres my drill?

Heheheee...those of us with CJ's never had to worry about that plastic stuff....

Don't worry man, you'll find that once you start tearin crap off, it's just the beginning of the intense desire to add as much stuff as you can...whether you can afford it or not...lol!

As far as how it will perform with 30's, ummm.....we need to talk.

We'll get you on 3N93 in Big Bear and you'll be convinced you need all this crap on your jeep...

what rick means, of course, is "function over fluff"
we sometimes see too much "fluff" on the trails and fluff doesn't always have a good function. like crome steps, for instance. :D

the big bear ride is great! it is pretty difficult for a stock height jeep with no mods, but we can get you through :)
first suggested mods: rocker guards, and sway bar disconects.
that is besides, of course the "safety equipment"
hope to see you on the trail!

Thanks, I'll put that in mind ;)... do you have any suggestion where I can start with an easier trail???

John

well. there are lots of them. most of the trails we run, including big bear... a stock jeep can do. but of course, that really depends on driver ability, and lack of fear. either way, unless you just want to drive on dirt roads, which isnt too fun, i'd STRONGLY suggest rocker pannels. you can make them yourself, or get some for around $200 bucks. the sway bar disconnects can be bought fpor about $65 bucks, or you can make them for about $5.00. another tj owner would be glad to explain to you how to make a set. there is really nothing to it.
trails.... hmmm??
miller jeep trail, doran canyon, big bear/arrowhead, there are lots of them, and for most of these trails there are by-passes for the more difficult sections. but... again, ROCKER PANNELS :)

sarah

nailer is right.

sway bar discos: get some shakle pins to replace the bolts that connect the sway bar link to the axle from home depot. they're cheap, kind of a pain at times, but they work for beginners.

rocker guards: talk to jim at JC Fab And Design (http://jcfabanddesign.com) ... he's our fab guru! or pm him jim79cj7

also, if you're going to be "roughing it" make sure you get road hazard on your tires. see the Product/Vendor review section of this site and you'll see that we recommend America's Tire.

you're on your way!

Thanks for the pointers guys.... I'll definitely get a rocker guard that's one of the upgrades I wanted to do anyway, but as far as the sway bars what does it really do for you.... and who's scared??? I know I don't have much experience but I'm willing to learn as much as I can... that's what you guys are for right???;);):P

NAILER341

they are actually ANTI-sway bars. they keep you in better control on the road. off road, however, they hinder your jeeps wheel travel. on a tj they are MUST on the road. that is why we suggest "disconnects" so you can easily disconnect, and re connect them. it willl increase wheel travel by about 6-8"

Trailbst
07-28-03, 01:31 PM
To expand for you an what Nailer said, the anti-sway bar is connected to each side of the axle and goes through bushings on each frame rail. They keep the vehicle from experiencing excessive body roll during emergency maneuvers. Basically, they keep the body from rolling, so that you don't end up on your side if you have to jerk the steering wheel to get out of someones way. By disconnecting them, you allow each side of the axle to move toward and away from the frame with only the suspension limitations (length of shock and bumpstops).

Hope this helps.

Ok, got it.... I'll make sure that I save some money for that... good FYI you guys.:8 :) :D

07-28-03, 05:24 PM
hehehehe...I wheeled the first few times connected...lol.

The only reason I laugh, is that it was when I met Erik (nailer) He was sitting on my hood, keeping me from rolling.:) If I was disconnected, he wouldnt have had to do it. The front drivers side tire was about 3 feet in the air:eek: :D FUN :)

Its really easy to do this, dont hesitate to go to Home Depot and do it! If you need help, let me know, and Ill help you...Im about an hour north of you :)

Here's the write up I did on it on ANOTHER forum :

to further elaborate the need for protection, i ran rock garden 2 weekends ago in a stock YJ, made it through with no hang-ups or stucks. Here is a list of the items i hurt. Bashed front shackles(nearly bent a main spring), dented oil pan, scratched exhasut pipe, scraped under side of Tcase skid, and dented the lip of skid on the frame rail, scratched rear front spring hanger and spring, dented gas skid, and scratched the front rim. So i didnt break, and made it, surely a stock TJ can do better.

sounds like you didnt have a spotter wolf :) only 2 of those things count. the oil pan and the almost spring. join us out there when we go... we'll see you through :D... cant promise no damage, but you will have a spotter when you need one, and a strap if it is needed.
but you did do it with no rocker protection? if that is the case... you did well, or got lucky :) that is a tough rock garden for a stock jeep to do.. are you referring to 3n-93? where there is the water crossing then a rock garden, and then another rock garden at the end?
if so... that was one of my favorite trails as a stocker. it will really challenge you :)
see you on the trail:wave:

I ran John Bull stock...Just with rocker guards. I bought them just for that run, because I KNEW that if I didnt, Id be sorry. They were my first mod. And if I were to do it again, Id do it the same way...
1) Rock gaurds and disconnects
2) lift
3) tires and wheels
4) skids skids skids(Gas tank. oil pan, control arm. steeringbox)

Hey Nailer, yeah thats the one. I did have a spotter, but c'mon in a stock YJ you're gonna get hit either way. The group i want with was all Modded Scouts. No i had no rocker protection and never hit them once. Its fun, and most challenging in a stocker, but my jeeps been wheeled stock long enough, i need to lift it already, im getting sick of coming down on my skid.

NAILER341
07-29-03, 07:43 PM
yea, that is a tough spot. i like it up there in big bear. i want to run the "pontiac sluice". be sure to join us next time we go wheeling. :) i still recommend discos, and rocker protection:D

07-29-03, 11:51 PM
I dunno Tam.....my list is a little more like:

1) skids
2) more skids
3) more skids
4) self-clearanced belly skid
5) more skids
6) ......

I swear I'll get to that lift some day..... ;)
