View Full Version : Dishpan Springs (3N34) update
Old Fart 01-20-05, 11:17 AM From USFS:
The cement bridge that spans Deep Creek on 3N34 (T-6) received erosive flood damage.
As a result, no 4x4 or ATV traffic is allowed to cross the bridge until it is repaired.
Jeff
Dukes69 01-20-05, 11:59 AM No Way!! Erosion NOT caused by offroaders!!! Impossible. ;)
Still a bummer, no less. Hopefully they can repair it soon. :)
That stupid bridge!!!! I hate that thing.
Thanks for the info.
Old Fart 01-20-05, 01:25 PM Considering that it's in a closed area - shouldn't be an issue. But I thought I'd post anyway.
BTW - Don't hold back Sarah, tell me how you REALLY feel........... :)
mparker 01-20-05, 03:15 PM Hadn't that area been closed by the fires? I was under the impression, from talking to a few residents up there, that they had planned to keep that areas closed for several years. I was severely disappointed when i heard that...

Old Fart 01-20-05, 04:28 PM Yep, closed by the fire (part of Forest Order .05-1). I'll check and see what the latest info is on possible re-opening, but the order is through June 30, 2005.

That would be great if it opens this summer!
Old Fart 01-21-05, 11:17 AM Yerp.
Looking at some of the trails around lake Silverwood this last weekend (was in there with USFS), LOTS of water damage. I predict Silverwood Lake trail, Cleghorn, Pilot Rock will all be quite different.
Old Fart 01-21-05, 01:27 PM 2N33 (Pilot Rock Trail) is closed by 05-01. Hard to get there (last weekend anyway) as the CHP will turn you around right off the 138. 2N17X (Silverwood Lake Trail) is technically open.
The lake itself - I don't know - no one on it last Sun.

paultyler 10-10-05, 10:50 AM Does anyone know if Dishpan has been reopened yet?
Old Fart 10-10-05, 10:57 AM Dishpan has been reopened for quiute some time, with the exception of the bridge at T6 (which we're hoping to have redone by the end of October)
paultyler 10-10-05, 08:13 PM So if the bridge is out can I still make it through the entire trail?
Old Fart 10-10-05, 09:41 PM No, you can't access the trail from the Deep Creek side, and will have to turn around coming West before the bridge.

Is is worth doing up to the bridge, i.e., is any of the hard stuff accessable?

Yes very much so. The whole trail in fact ...
All of it. The bridge is where the first real rocks used to be before it was a bridge. In fact, this is arguably "better" than if the bridge was crossable - you get to do the trail twice ;)

Great. I am going up this weekend with some friends. I have not been on that trail before and thought the bridge might be right in the middle, cutting off half or more of the trail. But it sounds like it is near the end.
I apologize for the ignorance, but where should I start the trail (at which end) in light of the bridge issue? Thanks.
Paul
Old Fart 10-12-05, 11:40 AM Paul,
Bridge _is_ the end of the trail. East side start is off Green Valley Lake Road. Take it to 3N16 (go left, or North) to the intersection of Dishpan Springs Trail (3N34).

That is exactly what I needed to know. Thanks. I will let you know how it goes.
Old Fart 10-12-05, 01:45 PM Oh, I expect pictures. And a full trail report. And a listing of _anything_ you find on that trail that I need to let my AAT club know about :)

Damn....you're a demanding Old Fart. Ok. I will post pictures.
:)
Old Fart 10-12-05, 02:38 PM Demanding, no. Lazy - Yes!
Need to ascertain trail conditions, and too lazy to fix the YJ brakes right now. :)

Is this the side by crab flats campground?
Old Fart 10-16-05, 10:50 PM yep
paultyler 10-16-05, 11:04 PM Well, I drove all the way out there on Saturday morning and the gate was locked. It said "closed to the public". I was pissed.
I really wish the forest service would post the closures somewhere closer to town. It took well over an hour for our group to get up to the gate after we had breakfast in Big Bear.
Once we realized the trail was closed we went down 3N16 for a boring trip down the X trail to Holcolmb Creek where we turned right and ended at the rock garden. Overall, a colossal waste of a Saturday. I left Big Bear feeling very unfulfilled. Maybe next time....
Old Fart 10-17-05, 09:33 AM Gate was locked at the Green Valley end?
blackZZR 10-17-05, 12:07 PM I am sorry you hit a dead end, I think 3n16 is a good trip, it has some great vistas and side trails, I have gotten some great pictures everytime I go down it and enjoy it a lot, it may be a easy trail but it covers some great country. Some nice hikes and interesting geology near the Snow Road.
paultyler 10-17-05, 02:30 PM Gate was locked at the Green Valley end?
Yes. Right near crab flats campground.
Old Fart 10-17-05, 05:29 PM Paul, I'll have to get to the bottom of "why". My mistake for the bad advice - i should have checked!

FOREST ROAD CLOSURES
Due to recent heavy rain and snow storms, many roads on the National Forest suffered severe damage and are either impassable or, only passable by a high clearance vehicle. Before traveling on the National Forest Road system, check with the local Ranger Station to check road conditions. Road repairs started on Monday June 6, 2005, to allow better access for fire equipment this summer. Be careful and watch for equipment on the road network. (road repair press release)
Forest Road Closures:
3N34 From 2N26Y to Tent Peg Campground (Dishpan Springs) remains closed until late fall, due to bridge damage.

I don't blame you at all. NO problem.
Old Fart 10-18-05, 01:14 PM No, but _I_ blame me. Gotta earn this immense Federal salary, giving you bad intel won't cut it :)
