We're getting a group together to do a Dishpan Springs/Big Bear/Arrowhead series of runs the weekend of June 7th. Outdoor camping (no cabins this time!) at Crab Flats.

i really need a good run. i hope to be able to go on this one, but right now, things are really one day at a time, sometimes down to one minute at a time. if everything permits.... i'll be there.
is this looking like a camping run, or a day run?

sarah
06-04-03, 09:30 PM
we are thinking day run.

where are people coming from? where should we meet? we were thinking the Village at Lake Arrowhead (on the lake) at the McDonalds. mmm, McDonalds. we can post directions if anyone doesn't know where this is.

I'm up for a day trip Saturday. I need to drop my tow rig and trailer somewhere. Normally I do that in Fawnskin.

I don't know the streets in Arrowhead extremely well, but if we meet at the McDonald's in Arrowhead, does that make me assume that we're running through Deep Creek? Deep Creek is closed for a couple months. Is there another trail from Arrowhead up into Big Bear that I don't know about?

sarah
06-06-03, 04:19 PM
Welcome Tommy!
Fawnskin works. Where do you usually go?
Rick knows all the roads up there, he'll be online in a few hours. :)
10AM good?

TommyJeep
06-06-03, 04:34 PM
10AM sounds fine to me. I usually drop the tow rig near the fire station and head up the dirt road there. I think it's 3n12, or 3n09, I dunno. But meeting there works fantastic for me!

I usually run through 3N10 (John Bull), 3N93, perhaps 3N08 (Gold Mountain), but I'm up for anything.

sarah
06-06-03, 04:48 PM
cool!! do you have a location on the fire station? gps or address?

TommyJeep
06-06-03, 04:54 PM
Hmm, I might be able to calculate a GPS estimate from MapPoint, let me look into that...

Basically, Fawnskin isn't that big of a town. As you get into town, you'll see the post office on the left. There's a triangle intersection with a garage looking structure in the middle. The fire sation is on the other side of that (other side of the street too). Make a left at the first leg of the triangle intersection and look left. There you'll see a restaurant that's out of business. I park in their parking lot (dirt, leaves, etc).

TommyJeep
06-06-03, 04:57 PM
I dunno how you like your coords, so I'll list all three methods :D

N 34.26955* W 116.94722*
N 34* 16.173' W 116* 56.833'
N 34* 16' 10" W 116* 56' 50"

sarah
06-06-03, 05:00 PM
ooo, you're good. :D

TommyJeep
06-06-03, 05:05 PM
Here's a map too:

If you're coming up from Apple Valley, are you taking the 18 up the backside? If so, you'll be coming through Fawnskin in the other direction. The firestation is toward the end of town, and it'll be a right turn for you.

sarah
06-06-03, 06:56 PM
ooo, you're DOUBLE good! do you have a gps or are you using the internet?

TommyJeep
06-06-03, 07:12 PM
That map is from Microsoft MapPoint. FANTASTIC software! It doesn't show very many off-road trails, but for on-road stuff, I don't think it can be beat.

I do have a GPS, but it's ancient. Doesn't even have a moving map! Can you believe that? haha. Anyway, when I bought it, it was the creame of the crop, but times have changed. I rarely ever power it up now.

sarah
06-06-03, 07:52 PM
CHANGE IN PLAN!
fawnskin is around the *wrong* lake! we apologize, but here's some new coords ... N34 14.913, W117 11.364 ... it's the Lake Arrowhead Village intersection with 189 and 173. Meet in the Village near McDonalds (mmm, breakfast). You can leave the trailer there or at the trailhead, which is right nearby. Looks like you can take 18 up the mtn. Let us know.

TommyJeep
06-06-03, 08:02 PM
That's fine with me. Question is, where are we wheeling?

sarah
06-06-03, 08:37 PM
Hook Creek Road 2N26Y, to Dishpan Springs 3N34, which hits 3N16 at Crab Flats. From there, we can go where our Jeepin' hearts desire. :)

sarah
06-06-03, 08:42 PM
Holcomb Creek is easily accessible, 3N93, and has a really cool rock garden. (The pic at the top of this site!!)

TommyJeep
06-06-03, 08:42 PM
Ah, I've never done Hook Creek, that I know of. Something new! I didn't know there was a way up to and through Dishpan Springs besides Deep Creek.

Sounds like fun.

sarah
06-06-03, 08:46 PM
Hook Cr. is just a faster way to get to the trail head. Dirt road.

TommyJeep
06-06-03, 08:57 PM
You know, I've driven many times from Arrowhead to Big Bear, always through Deep Creek. I think I remember a road sign "Hook Creek". Isn't that the road that use to be dirt, and is now paved with speed bumps? My confusion comes where we go from there. I've always gone the same direction and gone through Deep Creek, although I know there's other roads out there. I just hope you guys know something that I don't (very very good possibility :D ) Now that I think about it, it would seem strange that the forestry service would block the only access through there. I've read several emails from people with first hand experience that Deep Creek is completely blocked off for the next two months.

I'm anxious to experience this "other way"up to crab flats. :D

sarah
06-06-03, 09:07 PM
We're not going on deep creek, unless you're referring to 3N34 as deep creek?
it will be fine, if it's not we have plenty of forest maps and will find our way to somewhere. we do these trails all the time. :)

TommyJeep
06-06-03, 09:12 PM
Deep Creek is the deep water crossing on 3N34. If you have a plan to avoid 3N34, then we've got nothing to worry about :D Then again, even if we come across Deep Creek, from what I understand, the forestry service's "road block" is nothing but a nice rock pile begging to be traversed. I wouldn't want to violate the rules and jeopardise our trails, however. ;)

heheheh...had a great time wheeling with you guys, as usual...

We got home about 10:30, and I was exhausted. Went straight to bed (Sans shower...YUCK!) Sarah the dog, :sarah: and Susans kids were a lump of bodies in the back seat all the way home. About 30 min from home, I was starting to justify closing one eye:yawn:, so I pulled over and let Susan get us home safely.

For all you guys who dont know yet...lol...I finally got stuck:D  It was SOOO close...hehe. I took the line up the side of the entrance to Holcomb Creek. Almost made it, posed for a picture, and slid off the rock :( Totally and thoroughly stuck. No amount of rock stacking and creative spotting could get me out. Finally, out came the strap, and Rick had the honor of rescuing me for the first time. Oh well, record broke. Im sure Sarahs got some great pics of it.

I was reading on JF this morning about John Bull, I think it was GoodTimes, he made mention to the fact that they made it more challenging about two weeks ago. At first I would have argued the fact, as I had no problems at all climbing the first rock garden (the one where Chris lost his rear window:rolleyes: :P ) But, they sure have mades some areas interesting, lots of new rocks. After the narrow pass with the tree on the left, and the rocks descending near the end of the trail, before the dirt mounds and mud puddle(currently dry) were AWESOME. Totally new. My poor skid plates really took a beating. I was nearly stuck again near the top, but Ricks quick thinking and a few choice rocks got me going again.

We had the good luck of meeting up with Dave (the red Rubicon we met at Calico on Memorial Day) at the entrance of Holcomb Creek. What a total coincidence. He ran with us the rest of the day. I think he had his first carnage, some body damage...the tree won.:P  :D His poor fender will never be the same again. (Dave, I came up with a username for ya... how about "rubyred?")

Thanks for another great day...Im looking forward to the next outing...:D We missed you guys...Chris :duke:, Brian :yay:, Chuck :hat: and Erik:8

tams, you couldn't have summed up the day any better! and
YES, SHE GOT STUCK!
it's ok tho, it was a great place to get stuck! as she was climbing this amazing obstacle she slipped off of 'the important rock.' we'll have the photo montage later, we're going to the offroad expo!

Well that looks like a great weekend. would have loved to see the stuck that tams had gotten into. Darn it- would have had some carnage footage for the Jeep Videos. Wait till I have everyone stuck at some point- will be a cool DVD.

We went up to the Kings river- met Al, Igofshn, and tore up the water for a little while.

Next weekend it my daughters birthday party so it's an at home day. and the week after is maybe last chance canyon on the 21st.
