Last year I didn't see any bears.

NAILER341

steaks, and bears are both cool. :) if we are going to be in the "out back" we may as well get the full experience. generally bears dont want people. they will just go after their food. in a p[lace like this, i expect these bears are relatively civilized, and know what a cooler looks like :)
everything will be just fine. we arent the first campers here.lol

Yes, many bears do know what a cooler looks like, and what they are used for. It is not uncommon to hear about bears literally breaking into cars to get at the coolers (they rip the doors off).

I have had several encounters with bears in the back country, they are generally pretty easy to get rid of (even for a short fat guy like me). Just be prepared to make noise on short notice (yell at them, kick dirt and rocks, wave your arms around over your head, and basically act like a lunatic---should be natural for some of us  ), and they generally go away.

Anytime I am in bear country, I always cover my cooler with a blanket so it doesn't look so much like a cooler, and store anything that "smells" (soap, toothpaste, sunscreen, food, etc) in a "bear can" (available in the backpacking section of most large sporting goods stores) away from camp. Also, I leave duffle bags, back packs etc with all the pockets open--if a bear wants in, they will get in. If you leave it open, there is a greater chance that the bag won't get torn apart while the bear goes through it.

blkTJ

FYI, if you do encounter a bear don't turn your back to walk (or run) away. It will be less likely to charge if you are facing it. just my $.02

I guess we've lost our welder... what else was Jim gonna bring that we have to think about?

brian, i'll put those mirrors on my list. i'm not sure if we're going to go sans doors from that far. other than spare parts, i'm not really sure what jim was bringing that ya'll were sharing.

tammy said that rick and i could join your "group" since ours is no longer. all we really need is a grill/stove. we're going to bring our little one, but it takes forever to cook.

we'll be staying at the icehouse inn or whatever it's called thursday nite.

Thanks Sarah, I'll try and remind you Wednesday night if I'm not overwelmed with my oun junk. I will be bringing a camp stove FYI.

The one thing I can't help but think about is that we no longer have any tow vehicles going. That means we might not be able to get a seriously broke Jeep home. Hopefully we won't have any.  :D :yay:

That is a good point. I thought about towing my jeep, but since there were going to be a couple others doing that, I figured we would be covered if we really needed to tow something home.

I suppose I could still do it, but it would be a long, slow drive up (the truck has 175K on it), and I would need to put a fan in it tomorrow. I don't have a trailer though, and don't really have the $$$ to rent one.

What do you guys (& gals) think, should we make a effort to find a trailer? For that matter, does anyone have a trailer? Would it be worth the effort to find one?

sarah
07-15-03, 05:18 PM
if worse comes to worst, we can always rent a u-haul truck one way. i'm sure they have one big enough to fit a jeep!

FYI : If any vehicle encounters problems and need's to be towed i can lend out my garage for any fixes or repairs that would have to be done after the trip and my AAA card works that far away I'm only 1 1/2 hours away from the trail head in Citrus heights (suburb of Sacramento) not to mention i know all the 4wd parts stores and shops so i can get replacement parts pretty quickly.

Good deal! I wasn't really looking forward to towing the heep up there. I really need a set of rings and a decent cam in that old GMC before I start dragging things around too much.

Besides, at 6 or 7 mpg, it makes for a expensive trip!

We made it back alive, well, at least rick and i did. heard something from jim about erik having trouble near sacto.

i think the best way to sum up the trip was: it was like an extreme jeep commercial!! it was so wild, so beautiful, and so fun. the trail just kept going! every turn, every corner was another obstacle. each nite we camped at a lake or river on giant slabs of rock. we have so many pictures it's going to take a whole day to go through them! rick brought the laptop so we could wipe the cf card and we had a slideshow the last nite.

i gota run, just wanted to check in and say we're all good. jim, we really missed ya on this one. chuck too. RUBICON OR BUST BABY!!

this indeed, was an incredible trip! the first day was ROUGH! but we made it through without any people injured. there was a major roll over while towing a broken jeep back to the camp for it to be AA'd out to the town.
i think the quote for that day was,
"things just got REAL ugly" and, "thingd just went from bad to worse"
well, after this roll over, a couple of us stuck arround to see tequila dan, and his jeep off of the trail to a safe camp, and the rest of the group moved to continue the fun.
after getting dan up the narly hill to camp, those of us that stayed to get him out hauled ass to camp, and showed up about an hour before dark.
what a gorgeous place this is! FANTASTIC! the rock gardens seemed to go on forever, and the slabs were great. for a wheeler, you can really have it ALL. you get water (deep), rocks galore, off camber, hill climbs.... you really get it all here.
we had a great group of people out there, and everyone made it off of the trail.
kirk went through 4 tires, and a lower control arm bracket.
seaphan got a couple of nice body scars, and a bent control arm.i got a bubble in a tire, and a couple of strress cracks in the front fenders.
i think that is about it for real damage on the trail besides dan, whose jeep took the roll.
great trip guys! lets do it again.
DUCY ERSHIM in september?
i limped my jeep home about 20-30 miles at a time, and got home at 6:00 this morning! thanks for sticking arround til we got to town brian! :)
i am absolutely exhausted.
i think it is fuel line, or fuel filter related. i never got it resolved on the road... just limped the whole 400 miles:eek:
pictures will come later..

... and all of those bear comments were just plain torture - there were no bears! lots of mosquitoes - lots and lots! - and quite a few lizards, but other than that there were no annoying wild creatures.

Whatsup everyone! Just joined here :) I should have my pics up sometime tonight or tomorrow the latest ... so many good ones ... so many I wish I had taken but couldn't.

This was a strange trail ... I was often too worried about the lines I was taking than worrying about taking pics of the action! I am so glad I squeezed this trip in before I moved out of the west :8 :D

WOW.

That trip was sooooo incredible it was surreal. The scenary was like a back drop in a movie. The Rubicon Trail was everything Id hoped it would be and MORE.

Beautiful sunny days, warm nights...swimming in a clear mountain lake or river everynight to wash off the trail dirt. GREAT friends, good food and AWESOME wheeling. The only thing that could have made it better is if Dan didnt have the problems that he did.

My sincere condolences to Dan. Im soooo sorry :( Ive called a few times and left a message. Im concerned about his whereabouts and how he's fairing. As soon as I hear from him, Ill post. Id also like to take this opportunity to thank Chris, Erik and Brandon for going ABOVE and BEYOND the call of duty...How in the world you guys managed to not only right Dans Jeep and how Chris was able to get it running, and the three of you to get it back to base camp Ill never know. Dan asked me to Thankyou for your efforts. I want to thank you as well. I could only hope that the one day you need something from me, Ill be there and able to help.

Here are the pics I snapped...a whole lot of them!. And this is after I deleted a bunch.

http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4289609659

After we picked up our doors at Chris' friends house, we visited for a little bit, then went down to the river and went swimming. Finally, we left and drove till dark, staying in Angels Camp. We wiggled our way down 49, driving thru all the old gold mining towns. The old buildings and towns are incredible. We drove through Yosemite on Monday Afternoon...and finally made it back home Monday night around 10pm. Im glad we didnt rush home.

Id like to do this trip again, soon. Id really like to take it a bit slower...stay a few days at Spider Lake...explore some of the area. Maybe we could get a few folks that would like to do it again...Im sure we could coerce Jim into going. :D

Im thrilled at how well Emily did! Not bad for a little girlie Jeep! Thankyou to Chris and John for some awesome spotting! I couldnt have done it without you! No damage, except the license plate...and a few nice dings on the undercarriage, the tcase skid is kinda flattened on one side too...and a new dent in my oil pan. The Kilby Steering box skid was nicely broken in, and the heavy duty tie rod and diff gaurd were well used and abused. (Thankyou CHRIS!) And my sweet ass gas tank skid (customized and strengthened by Erik and Chris) performed admirably!

Once again Thankyou everyone for making this an awesome trip. Im looking forward to the next one already!

Thanks and thanks! Now I have my work cut out for me ... first fix all the dings and bruises and then start working on the lift :)

Here (http://zr2.cs.ucla.edu/seapahn/gal/rubicon) are a few of my pics ... instead of viewing them online, you can download the whole gallery as a zip file (http://zr2.cs.ucla.edu/seapahn/gal/rubicon.zip). Let me know if you want the full size version of any of them.

Whoever has pictures and or video- if you send me a copy- i will add it to a DVD- The DVD's cost me about $12.00 to make each copy- including the Disc, case, printing, burning- and hours and hours of editing- I will let everyone have a copy at just what it is costing me to make- I can make a slide show with all the still pictures and a movie with the Video- Anolog or Digital.

Let me know if you have something to add!!!

So ... what was everyone's "damage" like?

I just swapped my two bent lower control arms ... nothing too bad but both driver sides were a bit outa shape. Thanks to goodtimes for the pair of spares!

Other than those, both rear bumper end caps are in the trash. Good thing I had them on since they saved my rear quarters. The passenger side rear quarter is a bit bent .. I seem to have landed hard on something (so many I can't remember exactly when) since the plastic in the wheel well is a bit busted. I got some VERY good ideas from Eric and what he has done with his jeep on how to "fix" this (sometime in the future).

I have a good idea on how to "fix" the infamous dent in the front ... I'll try to post pics once that's done.

My front driver side tire won't hold pressure ... it has a slow leak at the bead. I tried to pop the bead and redo it but it still leaks. I'll have to take it to a tire store and have them remount and balance it I guess.

That's about it ... the rest, as far as I can tell is just the normal bumps and bruises on the skids and whatnot underneath. The wheels are also nicely scratched up after I washed the mud off :D

My wheels suffered the same damage... all are holding air but there's a lot less of the outer rim. oh well, just that much closer to beadlocks. I haven't washed the mud off the bottom yet so I'm not sure what I'll find then. We'll see.:yay:

one blown drivers side front shock and lots of loose bolts.

I took my leaking wheel to be remounted and balanced (weights were all gone) and this is what the lady working there tells me when I went back to pick it up ...

"Sir, your wheel had about 6" of mud about 1" thick inside the bead. Our technician thinks you may have been offroading and the pressure got too low. But it's fixed now."

I said: "hmmm ... really? That's odd but thanks!"

:D :D :D The look on her face was kinda funny when she was trying to explain to me what the problem may be. :D
