View Full Version : tube fenders
After mashing :duke: my passenger side fender again  I am toying with the idea of fabricating tube fenders :yay:
Has anyone got any pics, ideas or i wouldn't do that again stories.
TIA
Well...it's too late now - I started cutting  :duke:  :duke:
Sounds great Aston, what size tube are you using?
NAILER341 01-13-06, 10:02 PM atta boy. lets see what you come up with.
i have plans for some as soon as i can get chris to bend some tube.
how do you plan to design them?
Yes we have no fenders :duke:
I wanted to leave the inner fender in place. So I cut judiciously, expecting to trim more off when I knew what I was doing.

I started with the Poison Spider design and then made some changes. The flare will not go all the way to the bottom of the sill, it will stop about 4" short, just above the rock rail.
Cardboard mock-up of course and a couple of

Then I bent some tube, woo hoo. 1.25" 11ga - hydraulic bender :yay:
Piece of :cake: once I got the hang of it. :homer:

Those look awesome Aston!
Any plans to cover them or going to leave them open?
And how much beer do would you want me to bring to do that to mine? :D
seapahn 01-16-06, 02:00 PM Looks great Aston!
If it were me, for added strength, I would probably add a little tube between the outside and the inner ones, right where it start to bend down (near the middle of the hood).
But that looks like it'll take a hellova beating! :D
Britain 01-16-06, 08:54 PM Very Very Nice!
Question do you have offset rims? Looks like you added a bit more from original outward fendor position.

All rims are offset, no? :duke:
Sorry I can't help being a wiseass.
Those are Jeep Sarah :duh: Edition 8" rims w 5" BS and 2" spacers. The centerline of the tire is in the same place as my old 10" rims w 4" BS. The difference is my old steelies were not round and the alloys are. :sarah:

It's fun to show off the tubes but the first mud hole is gonna be ugly :duke:
A lot!
goodtimes 01-16-06, 11:32 PM It's not gonna be the mud hole that does you in....it's gonna be the first time you run down Price Rd, or Cottonwood rd, or Reddington Rd after a rain that is gonna make you wish you would have skinned those things. Then they are gonna rust, and you are going to wish you would have painted them too.
seapahn 01-17-06, 12:18 AM Also when it gets dark, you'd also wish you had wired those IPC lights to SOMEWHERE :good:
'corse I'm gonna skin them, wouldn't be fenders without   ;) :D

goodtimes 01-18-06, 05:21 PM Those look much better with the skin. Now get some paint on them so you can scrape it off on some rocks!
dirtgrip 01-20-06, 07:49 PM Hey Aston-nice job.My 1st fab project was similar.F&R tube fenders.Side panel on fronts is removable for acess to ARB compressor under brake booster.Shamless poser pic.Still got to figure out how to blend with rockers or scrap them & start over.Painting will be when weather warms up.http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/dirtgrip/IMG_0104.jpg

The result is awesome, I am very pleased.
Many thanks to Dave Furrey for all the welding help.

goodtimes 01-24-06, 10:01 PM With the exception of the color (shoulda been blue to match the rest of the rig), those look great!!! I'm impressed! Now let's go beat them up on some rocks so they aren't so perty (and therefor match the rest of the jeep).
NAILER341 01-24-06, 10:29 PM you really did a great job on those. big props!
Jeri Lyn 01-24-06, 10:45 PM Suuuweeet. :D (note to self: steal rolled over jeep counter idea....)

Thanks everybody :yay:
They took a lot of work but it was well worth it.
I am now kicking around design ideas for the rear http://www.myjeeprocks.com/forums/gallery/files/5/0/3/fatbastarddance.gif (http://www.myjeeprocks.com/forums/gallery/showimage.php?i=2346)

Just an idea-weld tubes to PSC Cornercrushers
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/dirtgrip/IMG_0185.jpg
MendoZJ 01-25-06, 07:00 PM Some of the best lookin flares ive seen. Nice!
Can you make me some? :)
dirtgrip 01-25-06, 07:08 PM Well after time and materials the cost wouldn,t be worth it to you.A friend and I spent waaaaaaay to much time making them but had a lot of fun.Oh yea let,s not forget the cost of beer.:D
Just an idea-weld tubes to PSC Cornercrushers
That IS a good idea.
The crushers are a bit bloody expensive: $281 std and $368 big opening.
I plan to go with the trail corners at $144 and make my own side plates. I already have the steel left over from the front.
Then bend tube to match the front, same angles etc....
Right now I'm in the cardboard/masking tape phase :yay:
Here's my cost est:
tube $35
plate $65
bending 3hrs
cut/weld/grind repeat 36hrs (2 peeps x 3 days x 6 hrs)
I know that sounds like an insane amount of time but it includes measuring, swearing, screwing up, chasing the dogs, fluid breaks etc...
dirtgrip 01-25-06, 07:38 PM I,m sure whatever you do will turn out great-just don,t forget the fluid breaks. We all need to get more fluids.
dr hook 01-27-06, 11:41 AM those fenders are pimp. good thing my best bud is a muffler man and has access to benders :D
Work on the rear fenders has started :yay:
I messed around with masking tape and made a template out of masonite for the plasma cutter. Then I fired up the angle grinder and starting cutting  :duke:
I didn't want to just cut the :poop: out of it and make a big ugly mess. :sarah: I wanted to match the angles we used at the front and leave some extra room in the rear for when I get round to moving the axle back
The corner of my Toys by Troy rear bumped had to go. I was a little unsure about it because the corner tube has saved body damage on a few occasions. However, clearance has increased by about 4" vertically and 3" horizontally. Maybe I can trim a little more off  :good:
Now I am waiting on the PSC corners.

Here's today's report. I bent the tubing. I didn't get the bends exactly where I intended but both sides are the same.

goodtimes 02-01-06, 11:29 PM I dunno about the rear flares you got there.....personally I would attach them with something other than duct tape.

dirtgrip 02-03-06, 06:22 AM Those are coming along nicely-keep the pics coming. What type of bender are you using??
Those are coming along nicely-keep the pics coming. What type of bender are you using??
I dunno :duh:
It's hydraulic but I don't know the make/model.
The project continues....
Today we installed the PSC corners and cut plate for the sides. PSC powder coat is good shite - it was a pisser to grind off!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/aston27/zr7.jpg
Then we tacked on stand-offs and the tube :yay:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/aston27/zr8.jpg
Then the skin went on (that's David in action, thanks man)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v230/aston27/zr9.jpg
All tacked up woo hoo

Final weld and clean up tomorrow.
Jeri Lyn 02-03-06, 09:52 PM Looks awesome. :D
Today was welding/grinding and welding/grinding and welding/grinding and welding/grinding and welding/grinding:duke:  ;)
However, the result is pretty bloody good - The dogs bollocks, so to speak.

goodtimes 02-05-06, 05:46 AM Well, I guess it is better to have your tail light held on with duct tape rather than the tube....but it is still kinda "redneckie":P
nice work!
Aston, awesome work to you and your crew!
NAILER341 02-05-06, 08:56 AM looking good austin. just curious though why you didnt make the steel line up a bit better with the door frame on this one?

The passenger side was pretty mangled so getting anything flat and square to fit was a challenge. ;)
Plus this was not the final fit - it got better with a little tweaking.
Final pics soon, stand by!!!
chris85710 02-10-06, 09:25 AM You did one hell of a job....Kudos.
Took a little ride out into the Sonoran Desert today. We found some Indian ruins - very cool.
Anyway, here's some pics of the final install.

Navy-Jeepster
Professional looking job. I think I'll take the easy way out and get the Posion Spider tube fenders as my YJ is getting the cracks above the wheel wells.
