Panamint Valley Days is coming up,
I think Nov7-9. Has anyone been to that event? It looks like it might be a good opportunity to see some new trails.
Also thanks to all for the the great trail ride up Rowher flats. I ran it again last weekend with a buddy. Sorry I missed the B-Que, it looked like fun.

I'll be there. Extremely beautiful and rich with history. I'm totally looking forward to it!

I went last year and it was sooooo windy I left after 1 full day. It was so windy that the port-o-potties blew over, my 10'x17' tent broke and it rained the entire time except during the raffle.

My advice is to bring a small low profile tent (2 man size) and bring extra fuel. I was driving to Trona after each trail ride to refuel. Aired down with a head wind I would return to camp with 3/4 of a tank left!

I'd love to meet fellow MJR wheelers out there!

Other than the weather, which I should've expected or at least prepared for, everything was cool! It wasn't very crowded as you might expect. The trail rides had roughly 1 dozen vehicles each.

I'm prepared for this year's PVD!

We're planning on attending. That is if we can get the rear end back together in time. My wife was driving it before the Hi Desert Round Up and the rear bearings went out. She babied it home, good thing it was at the Victor Valley College and we live across from there.
I've got the pinion shaft seated and got to put the carrier back in along with the axles and I'm done. That should be an hour job. We plan on bringing the kids, it'll be Sean's (2yr old) first time four wheeling since he was born. We went to the Hi Desert Round Up while Sandy was pregnant with him. She rode the whole thing except the Rock Gardens. She got out and took some pics.
If we're there look for the 98 Chili Pepper Red Jeep with Marvin the Martian on all four corners and a dented front end on the driver's side.

ISHAM CANYON RUN (Friday and Saturday)

Friday and Saturday Drivers’ meeting 7:30am / Run leaves 8:00am

Friday Night Drivers’ meeting 6:00pm / Run leaves 6:30pm (This gives you time to have dinner before hitting the trail.)

This is a run limited to 25 vehicles. Only short wheel base vehicles (94” or shorter), with a minimum tire size of 33”. Vehicles need to be locked front and rear, with a working winch and no tops allowed. Isham Canyon is one of the tightest, most technical trails Panamint Valley Days has to offer. There is not a lot of room for error. You are expected to help the other drivers through the trail. This run should prove to be very challenging for both driver and vehicle.

this looks interesting :D

You are in Lancaster and it's going to take you 3 hours? I am in LA and it will take me how long?

When is everyone going up there? I heard there are runs on Friday. Is anyone going on those?

Oh yeah, is everyone camping on their own or together? I know nothing about the site and don't know about the camping situation. I am also trying to decide on a tent situation. Bivy? Dome? Fly? Fly over Dome? Fly over Bivy? (yeah, I have too many tents for one small person)

NAILER341

usually there a group or 2 of campers... some members of the group get along better than others ;) you have the party animal section and the tea tottler section, and sometimes a section inbetween :)
as far as tents go.. i'd choose one that can take a bit of wind. from what i understand, it can get pretty windy there.
looking forward to meeting you ;)
i plan to leave sometime on friday.. it really depends on how my schedule plays out on that day, and the day before. that will dictate the time i leave on friday.

Hmmm. The bivy is the lowest profile (22" total height). Looks like a nylon coffin. The dome is fairly stable and can be weighted as well as staked. I would only use the fly if it looked like it was going to rain and then use it over the top of the other tent to provide extra weather proofing. It can be staked to ride the wind. It was staked to ride the onshore wind at Oceano and did so very nicely using sandbags. When I spent 15 hours trapped in a 22" tall tent in the rain last May, I swore I would get something I could stand up in that didn't weigh a ton. I found a 12'x12' tarp tent (24 oz) that can be tied in a dozen different ways, that can be used as a backup shelter for the tents and provide a cooking area.

I guess you could put me in the Teetotaler section. I can always walk to the party section for a small nightcap and walk back to get some quiet for sleeping. I don't want to try the trails hung over.

I have Thursday off so I can leave just about any time. I was just wondering if anyone was going to camp up there on Thursday night or if that is allowed. I guess I can email Val Henry about it.

How long do you think it will take you to get up there? Lakewood is not that far from me. Just a skip and jump down the 110 and 405.

I always overthink the tent. It's a female thing. We overthink our nests. Ever try to get a guy out of the house on a hunting trip without at least 3 different changes of mind about the rifle and ammo?

A couple of hours eh? That should finish up that book on CD. Leave before traffic and it should be a clear sail. I will be heading away from town, so it should be easier. 101 to the 170 to the 5 to the 14 (I'm a few blocks from the 101 in Hollywood). I'm going to button up the Jeep before I leave, so I won't be stopping to add or subtract clothing. Should make good time.

Ok, the rest of you: when do you plan to arrive?

I still don't know if some go up on Thursday night or wait until Friday morning. I don't mind open desert camping. I kind of prefer the more primative life. I think having the Jeep with me is very civilized.

I am planning on arriving on Thursday afternoon before dark. I spoke with one of the contacts for the event, said there is a lots of open desert camping at site. I will not be to far off the entrance road as I do not offroad the motorhome too far. I will try to fine a area with lots of camping room around if anyone wants to camp near. Look for a Bounder motorhome with white enclosed trailer ( Miracle Motorsports) with blue lettering. I have a flashing yellow construction light to help find me after dark. Even if you camp somewhere else stop by for happy hour Margarita.
I plan on the defense mine run on Friday. It has a few tough areas with bypasses.

dont forget the requirements!
1. Roll bar or full cage or factory hard top
2. Functional Parking brake or Mico-Lock
3. Tow strap or rope. (recommend rated at 2 times the vehicle weight).
4. First aid kit (what do you want when you are hurt?)
5. Jack capable of lifting the vehicle and a tool capable of removing lug nuts (don't forget your wheel locks)
6. Spare tire equal to or within 3 inches of existing tires on the vehicle. (no temporary spares).
7. Fire extinguisher with gauge indicating good/full, appropriately stored (not a missile hazard)
8. Seat belts for all passengers
9. Antennas must not exceed 4'6" (54"), (except when longer antennas/whips are required by certain OHV areas). measured from mount on body, bumper, etc.
10. Adequate attachment points front and rear, i.e., tow hooks, receiver, etc. Tow balls are generally rated for only 2,000 pounds, and that is when hooked to a trailer. They can come off with devastating results. Use with caution.
11. Battery hold downs (no bungie cords)

Ok, noticed my spare said "temporary" on it. Panic set in and I went to Pep Boys and found a real AT tire cheap. (I got the tire on sale, which I wasn't supposed to because the sale was for 4 tires, but that's why I keep the Kill-For-Me Red lipstick in the Jeep.)

The guy who is going to put the spare on my rim pulls the Jeep into the bay and pops the hood. Needless to say I was on him like a Jeeper on a free lift (labor included). He said he heard a noise. I told him to get back there where the spare is located. He said he wanted to check the oil. I told him to leave it. It's under warranty. Took 5 minutes and the threat calling his boss over to get his happy butt back to where the spare was.

When he was done and I was having the vehicle signed out, I noticed he put 19,637 miles down and that the vehicle needed diagnostics. It took me 10 minutes of arguing and a trip out to the Jeep to finally get the correct milage (1967) and an apology from the manager.

The down side of Kill-For-Me Red lipstick. The mechanics think you are an idiot.

All this because CA4WD said no temp spares.

We have a Pep Boys on Hollywood Boulevard. Back in my 280Z days it was great. Catch the subway at my house and get off at Pep Boys. Now that's convenience!

Well, it looks like I'm still going. I had some trouble getting the bloody time off from work! It was like pulling teeth!

After doing some poking around I'm not going to register for the event. I want to "tour" the Death Valley park's historical sites and natural phenomenoms. The PVD event doesn't visit spots such as "the racetrack", Ubehebe crater, sand dunes, Saline Valley natural hot springs, Scotty's Castle, etc.

I'll be setting up camp at the PVD base camp in Panamint Valley. I plan on leaving Long Beach sometime between 3-4am and arrive just in time for breakfast. I'll setup camp and hangout for a bit and then head out for the 1st day's tour.

If anyone is interested in joining me you're more than welcome to do so!

This is going to be an awesome weeekend making new friends and taking many scenic photos of this beautiful park!

Hello everyone! What's your ETA's to base camp? This way we know who to look for when we arrive. At the moment I'll be leaving at 3-4 am Friday morning. BUT, I'm going to see about maybe leaving Thursday evening around 8pm, setup camp and sleep in Friday morning.

M1Jeep - Friday early morning

I'm looking at leaving anytime on Thursday. I took that day off and Monday too (need my beauty rest when I get back). I am just going to hang out until all the Thursday people get there.

My biggest concern is WHERE DO I CAMP? I have no clue, no idea, never been there. Right now my idea is to just pull up in whatever shade exists and snooze and read a book.

There's no shade whatsoever in the valley/at base camp. It's just open desert with some small washed out sections. I'll keep an eyeball out for you and meet up with you either Friday early morning or if I'm motivated enough I may head out after 9pm (due to a prior obligation) Thursday night.

I'm not sure what we'll be doing, as the runs listed with my confirmation mailer don't quite match the PVD website. But as we're running 3 days of trails we'll probably do Jackpot cyn, Fish cyn, and the defense mine run as scheduling allows.

I am leaving Hollywood around 1pm and will be going 5 to 14.

I got the Tequila (I couldn't get JC Gold at Trader Joe's so you will have to settle for Especial) and when I got home I noticed the cap was cracked and leaking. There's a first. I am taking that bottle back. :( Someone bringing the mix or are we doing this straight? I also got an Italian red wine that is termed Bastardo...has something to do with Italian laws and vintners not wanting to waste good alcohol. We just made it back ... there's another orange glow from behind the mtns so it looks like the fires are at it again?

We had a great weekend! Most of us did the later morning run on Saturday which was not too difficult, but really fun. King4wd's did incredibly awesome - they lead the CJ right thru the trail! :D The trail got more difficult towards the end where we got to explore a few levels a rockin' mine and dodge some rocks of my own :P (feeling much better). It rained on the raffle so Rick, M1Jeep, Joe and I did a right run around Ballerat ghost town. We made it back in time to hang out around the fire and toast smores! It was pretty windy and chilly most of the weekend but especially last nite.

We woke up this morning to an empty camp minus Qwicksilver who helped us pick up camp a bit and the Kings who were getting back from a morning run as we were heading out. Thanks to whoever left a full kitchen garbage bag next to our couch!

On the way back we stopped by the Pinnacles for a bit and then I proceeded to leave my purse at Denny's in Ridgecrest. Ridgecrest ... here I come. Eeeh.

kirks ticket was called for some prizes too, but the caller had some personal problems with the raffle and kirk wound up not getting his 10 year supply of hand cleaner.

Rick and Sarah, Sorry for leaving with out saying good bye. We tried to wake you up, but we were unsucessful. :P Tammy says sorry for leaving the trash. She was having the kids pick up their mess and we forgot to throw it in the Jeep.

We Went to the Pinnacles for like a half an hour or so . . . thats some pretty cool stuff. :8

Panamint was fun!!! Its was good to see some old faces and put some old names to faces :D Defense mine was cool! Walking through that stuff was Awesome. Plus the wheeling was pretty damn good to get there. Where are the pics SARAH!!!! :P :P I'm liking my jeep mose and more everytime I take it out.

:( Hey! 3 days of wheeling...exhaustion. When you are driving the event's low-rider you have to expend a lot of energy trying not to rip the underside of your Jeep apart.

Pics later...I have to fight with Earthlink or get my Image Station to work...one or the other.

Just got back from the dealership. I gave the Jeep the Jeep equivilent of a day at the spa (deserves it). After a bath and an oil change and lube the dealer said that the Jeep was in top form and nothing damaged. Just some rock kisses.

I did that Lookout City Sunset run and it went around by Waterfall Zero (which I nearly drove through in the dark if I hadn't remembered a particular boulder and did a hard right to get to the bypass.) That was pretty technical for me. I was completely exhausted by that run. It scared the bejeezus out of me several times. Especially coming back in the dark.

Otherwise the trails were fun. I had to pay very close attention due to my short stature, but nothing out of hand. I had one spot where I thought I would have to get a strap. I got both front wheels in the air. I had to ride the belly plate to get out of it. I had no choice...there was no where to put my wheels.

Many thanks to you guys...TJTerry...Thank you for the air. :D Kirk, Al and Erik...great company. :D The Kings...had a great time with you. :D Tam ...your daughter can hold my raffle tickets any time...the girl is illegally lucky. :D Glad to meet you Jim...look forward to having some of your work on my Jeep. :)

Sorry I couldn't find more time to hang with you Sarah...everyone just ran off in all sorts of directions and I was pretty much stuck on the baby Jeep trails. :(

Brian...shoulda been there. We missed you. :(

Ah Chris, I think you got stuck on the rock that we first got stuck on. Remember? But we weren't towed off :D Sorry, just kidding. The primarily stock TJ except for locker and 30s, we did an awesome job. Although, try to put up with an 11 year old biting her nails and griping through that section!

I did drive Sunday. I drove the Jail Canyon run. AWESOME!! It was very tame even though the Jeep in front of us was taking very bad lines. She wasn't even looking out her window for tire placement. At least, Megan didn't complain on that one :D

I did that run on Friday and it was tame. The Mitsubishi Montero on street tires let me know where the bad spots were. I heard him go clunk and I went the other way. You didn't have to stick the head out the window, but you did have to pay attention if your Jeep was a bit on the short side. You are right, that girl was probably not paying attention.

How did you like the mine? I thought it was cute. :D

The mine was great! However, the bit about sticking your head out the window. We were told to do that at our first four wheeling expedition. We went through a beginners training course at Big Bear for the 1998 Jeep Jamboree and they told us to do that for proper tire placement; however, you can still get stuck on a rock. So, it's up to the driver what they want to do, but personally, I like sticking my head out the window to see where I'm lining my tire up.
