Anyone have experience with serious brake upgrades:

Master power brakes, Four X Doctor or Vanco???

Dual vacuum or hydro?

Installation and performance?

i have the hydroboost on my jeep, and love it, i also have the wj brake set up on there. the combinatin will stop this thing on a dime.
it is a rather involved job to get the wj brakes on there and have them work to their maximum potential. (with the wj knuckles)

vanco also has another product out there which gets you "big brakes".
it is a great mod from what i have heard, yet is a lot less work, and money to get into the jeep.

Who Needs Brakes. It Cost Me 2.69 A Gallon To Get It Moving, You Think I'd Want It To Stop.

I've got the "big brakes" and they are better. I don't have the hydro-boost but I've heard great things about it. :2:

I just installed the Vanco dual caliper disk brakes Nailer shows and the Vanco dual diaphram booster & master cylinder. WOW!!! I should have done this years ago!

So far, you haven't left the realm of Vanco's shop. Most of MP's stuff is from Van as is all of the 4x Doc's.

If you want the best and most serious upgrade that's the easiest to do, go with the Vanco big brake kit and his hydroboost.

If you want just a notch down, do the big brake kit and save yourself the hassle of hydroboost. It requires a lot of plumbing, work and expense that may not be worth it to the less than serious about their brakes.

I have disks all round (stock in the front and ford in the rear). However, with 35s the system is really inadequate. I am thinking that I need more clamping pressure. The master cyl and booster are prob 14 years old so it wouldn't hurt to change them.

You need to get out more. I have dispensed this information ad nauseum fielding tech questions on 3 other boards when I developed the brakes for Van.

Thanks for taking the time to tell us how well qualified you are, very impressive indeed.

Perhaps that time would have been better spent answering the question

I have the stock brake components on my CJ with a Vanco hydroboost. It works great and I don't think I need larger rotors or rear discs - it works great with simply having the additional clamping force. My rear shoes (still stock drums) wore out noticeably faster than prior to the hydroboost as one would expect. My shoes cost $32 a pair, so I'll gladly replace them once or twice a year for the superior braking performance. The front disc pads seem to hold up about the same so far. With hydroboost I can use my toe to brake in virtually any situation, as opposed to standing on the pedal with the stock vacuum booster. The hydroboost install is not too bad, it took me a day and then some because I had some problems bench bleeding the master cylinder and a couple of minor mounting/pedal issues unrelated to the hydroboost (worn out old junk). I screwed around with the master cylinder for several hours and ended up buying another one, so I think you could easily complete the whole project in a day assuming a YJ install is similar to a CJ. You probably want an upgraded steering pump as well if you don't already have that addition.

That's what I'm talking about.

I will definately get a new master cyl and ps pump at the same time. I hate pissing around with old stuff.
