jmbrowning, are you in?
brian4.2 10-13-03, 08:36 PM What area is "last chance"?
Baja Sixer 10-13-03, 08:45 PM Last Chance, Los Coyotes, either is cool w/ me! One is north and the other is south! We just need to do some Wheelin'!
baja zoni 10-14-03, 05:54 AM Hey, I'm game for last chance, or los coyotes. Just make up your mind. I'll be in town friday so you can buy me a beer at the wing.:D
igofshn 10-14-03, 07:42 AM I'd be up for Last Chance. Los Coyotes is just too far for me.
brian4.2 10-14-03, 08:05 AM I give up , where is last chance? dont know all the dirt roads in town:8
igofshn 10-14-03, 09:45 AM Last Chance is 20 miles NE of Mojave off hwy 14.
baja zoni 10-14-03, 10:30 AM Allright! Last Chance it is. I'm ready, see you on the trail. Well I have to run, it's time for me to gofshn.:D
we might have to bail on the trip, details to come. (it would be for a REALLY good reason tho.)
qwiksilver 10-14-03, 02:42 PM Don't know what Last Chance is. What sort of trail is it? Until I know what type of trail it is I wouldn't be able to say.
It's really hard being middleclass with a baby Jeep. You just can't go out with your friends who have 33" tires and lockers.
I am stuck on the blue trails at best. :(
JeepGal 10-14-03, 03:20 PM OK guys...Im linking a few albums of Last Chance. Ive done this with a total stock TJ AND 225's (The First Trip)...subsequently run with 31s and 2 1/2" of lift, and finally 33's and 3 1/2".

As much as Id love everyone to get down here to run Los Coyotes with me, I really think we all need a final pilgrimage out to Last Chance Canyon.
I know alot of us are attending the Riverside Jeep Show at the Dealer on Sunday. So maybe we can all head out to Last Chance Friday Night for a Night run a day run on Saturday.
whos in?
Tam
i'm 99% sure we won't be making this one. :(
Baja Sixer 10-14-03, 05:14 PM For those coming up on Saturday lets meet at Primo's in Mojave for breakfast at 8:30, departing Primo's at 9:00.

Am I correct? Mojave is about 3 hours from LA? Hmmm. Saturday you say? I have to check on a couple of things. For one thing, I am supposed to go out to Riverside on Sunday and there is a question of fuel. I am also supposed to meet up with some people Saturday night. ARGH! A quandry. I will know by Thursday.
If you have seen my Jeep...the word stock doesn't go far enough.

Comes down to fuel money. :8

Mojave is about an hour and a half out of LA.
Baja Sixer 10-14-03, 09:16 PM Qwiksilver, I'd say you're less than two hours from the trail head. Lancaster is sixty miles from downtown LA. Last Chance is about fifty miles north of Lancaster. Gas $1.67 a gallon, a good time wheelin'...priceless!
Jim? Kirk? ...anybody home  could be the last chance for Last Chance :( . How 'bout a little fun in the sun?
Chris_L 10-14-03, 09:43 PM I would like to join you guys, but I'm gearing up for JV on the 24th-26th. Have fun.

yup... i think i'll be there this go-round. anyone meeting at Jawbone station, or is everyone meeting for breakfast in Mojave.? either way... i need to get away from all this concrete & asphalt :D
baja zoni 10-15-03, 12:07 AM Quicksilver, Mohave is only about an hour and 15 minutes to an hour and a half from downtown LA. As for the trail, I once saw a stock Trooper with street tires make it with no problems.:P

Ok, if a stock Trooper with street tires can make it...I would be embarrassed not to.
If Mojave is that close, then what the hell was my ex griping about when he had to do a movie shoot up there? They left at 2am for a 5am call time. That's why I thought it was farther.
Hey, tell me when and where for breakfast. I got the day cleared and calendared. I just have to throw the Jeep Safety Bag in the Jeep and I'm ready boogie.
And gas is only $1.67? I just paid $1.91 this morning and thought that was a bargain.

Primo's is in the Stater Brothers parking lot on your right hand side, on your way out of Mojave as you head north towards Bishop on Hwy 14. Inexpensive fast food joint.

Got it. I might need a secret cell number of someone closer to the date in case I have one of my ditzy moments and get lost, but I don't think I will. If nothing else, I can ask at a gas station.
I hope they have good coffee. I will want to do a final fill up of the driving cup.
mikeythefireman 10-15-03, 10:03 PM I missed something. Why might this be the last Last Chance run?
I'll try to get out there. It really is 3 hours for me.:(
Baja Sixer 10-15-03, 11:12 PM From what I understand there is a plan to add Last Chance to Red Rock State Park which in turn results in a new management plan. See Cetrov's posting under Land Use dated 6-26-03. Who knows if and when they'll decide to close it, let's hope not!
Hope to see you on the run!

Your mom's birthday party on Saturday or Sunday? If you can do it on Sunday you can make the run.
I am doing the run on Saturday, getting some sleep Saturday night and running over to Riverside for the BBQ on Sunday. (Lord, hope I can afford the gas.)
Baja Sixer 10-17-03, 10:37 PM Hey, Kirk! Sorry you can't make the run. So what's up w/ the Jeep? Geared up? Ready for the next run?

How long does this run take from Mojave?
If I tow my Jeep and leave truck in Mojove where does the run come out at?

You can leave your tow rig at Jawbone ranger station. It is about 6 miles from the trail. It should take us about 4-5 hours depending on how much play time we have.
igofshn 10-21-03, 02:15 PM Meet at Primo Burger 0830 for breakfast or Jawbone ranger station 0930 (20 miles ne of Mojave on Hwy 14, left hand side) can't miss it.

Ugh...in the Jeep by 6:30am. Thank god I got rid of the rest of my life and have nothing to do on a Friday night besides sleep.
So is the trail actually in Jawbone?Or across the road or something like that?
Baja Sixer 10-21-03, 08:43 PM Last Chance Canyon is not in Jawbone. As Igofshn stated it is about six miles up the road from Jawbone. I don't know the name of the road that vears east off the 14 just north of Cantil that leads to the trail head. Meet us at Primo's in Mojave 8:30.

According to Yahoo maps 1 hour 47 minutes and 88.something miles. I'm a ditz and I drive slow...2 hours or better. No sleep for the wicked.
It's on the Ransburg road.
I cant wait.We are going to take tons of pics.
There is a cool bar\burger joint in the old mining town of Ransburg which is about 15 or so minutes past the end of the Last Chance trail.
Anyone up for an early dinner or a late lunch - or a snack at the old original Saloon in Ransburg after the run???
Cool old mining town with lots of history.
Chris_L 10-21-03, 10:47 PM Great burger place. Peanut shells on the floor. Have to also check out the restored old west barber shop too.

BigRick 10-22-03, 11:27 AM Well I think my wife and I are going to try and join you guys. She is not up for a 5:30 am ride for three hours so we will be staying in Mojave on Friday night, don't know were yet. I see that Last chance rd, is on the map. This would indicate that it is doable with a 2wd. Does the trail have chalenges other than the "notch" ? Last weekend I did Lockwood and Miller and thought they were great trails with many minor chalenges. How does LC compare to these?
easier if you stick to all the bypasses.
BigRick 10-22-03, 12:07 PM So how many by passes are there? It sounds like you can make it as hard or easy as you would like. Since I am new at this it is great to watch the more experienced drivers tackle the tough stuff. Then build the courage to try it myself. The group looks to be made of everything from stock to highly modified. This trail must have something for everyone, or you would not be drawing such a crowd, it looks like you are up to about 13.

You have a better rig than I do and I'm going. :) I'm doing it with the funny little 215 donuts and no lift or lockers.
cbremer 10-22-03, 01:51 PM last chance is cake... stockers need not worry :D it's more like a 2wd trail with obstacles off to the sides... not so much "bypasses" as we usually think of them. btw, i'm in :) it's official :8 hopefully my t-case doesn't puke it's guts out like it did on the way home from calico last month  damage: one output bearing and a few hours laying under the Jeep. upside: I got a kickass set of snapring pliers now :)
see y'all on Saturday for breakfast!

See, even when the Jeep is puking parts, a little ray of sunshine happens. :)
where exactly is primo burger?
Primo burger is on right in Mojave right after you turn towards Jawbone on the 14. Right hand side.
The trail is doable in a stocker - I've done it stock.
The trail was very rocky last time we went up it.
There are some spots that are hard - but nothing bad.
Al has an extra tie rod - two tie rod fatalities have been had on the LC trail with our group.
Erik about Killed his rig on the trail, with a little help from Chris.
NAILER341 10-22-03, 04:01 PM Erik about Killed his rig on the trail, with a little help from Chris.
you got that right! stockers can go through the regular trail just fine, as long as you have good spotting in some areas, and dont do the alternative difficult areas. :)
BigRick 10-22-03, 04:17 PM Sounds great! I was not so worried about how hard it is, but more about how easy it is. A few weeks ago I did a ride that really did not require 4wd and was a little disappointed, but enjoyed the sights and the company anyway and had a good outing. Looking forward to a great day and checking out the saloon.

This is real Jeep country - a 2wd will not make it at all !
The first part of the trail is a sandy wash - then into the canyons with lots and lots and lots of rocks, small climbs, and fun things to try.
upon getting out of the canyon and heading up into the hills there is an awesome climb along the ridge of the mountains with views forever -
you come back down the mountain to the burro schmidt mine, then up a very steep climb again to the top of the mountains to the cable shack - then back down to the end and off to ransburg for a meal.
No 2wd will make it unless it is a VW buggy or something like that.
you will use your skids on this trail.

Ok, that first shot was supposed to give us a sense of calm and confidence. Right?
And why is it no one takes photos of the bypasses?
Chris_L 10-23-03, 10:54 AM Whoops...I forgot about that shot. That was a YJ at some point. I am not sure of the story behind it, but I think it may have been stolen and then pushed off the cliffs above, near the powder mines.
