Qubicon 11-10-03, 02:30 PM Hi Everyone...A USC grad student contacted me about a documentary that she is making on and about Four Wheeling. She needs to go out and wheel, and take some footage. It sounds like she has never beed wheeling. I am available this Sunday, and plan on taking her to Rowher Flats. Anybody who is interested is more than welcome. Any takers?????????

I'm in! Rowher is a great trail :8 Kirk, Jim?
Let's get this girl some great footage! Guess that means Al & Chris have to be there too :D :D
:hat:
scubatch 11-10-03, 04:36 PM Sounds like fun to me.You planning on going up the back or front.I haven't been out since Coyote lake. jeff
Qubicon 11-10-03, 09:59 PM Don't know, I'll just go with the flow. I don't want to scare her, and will see what she's up for as we get closer to Sunday. I look forward to seeing you on the trail, its been a while.

If you want to keep from scaring her...take a female along. Sarah and Tam have Jeeps that are ready for that run. Besides...if she is doing a thing on Jeeps, she needs to have a representative of the JeepGirl Club.
jmbrowning 11-11-03, 01:51 AM I may be in, depending on what the Missus would like to do. She and I did Sierra Pelona Road which intersects multiple times with the Rowher trail. Sierra Pelona is pretty tame and she managed it just fine with a stocker Cherokee.
Rowher looked a bit more challenging to say the least. Yeah, I think it'll be fun, but we may have to leave her XJ behind and just take the TJ together.
How important is clearance on Rowher? I only have 30.5" and my oilpan already has a dent the size of a grapefruit from John Bull(oil pressure is still good thank goodness).
My articulation is OK, but who needs articulation when you have lockers:D!
Weather forecast for Santa Clarita looks good. (http://beta.weather.com/weather/local/USCA1019)
BTW, what's the spin on the film? Is this going to be some diatribe about how four-wheelers are spilling MTBE into the groundwater? Just curious as there is no such thing as a truly objective documentary.
Qubicon 11-11-03, 08:42 AM I'm bringing Pagona, and agree that the Jeep Girls Club should be represented. As for the trail dificulty, if we stick to Rowher Trail, a stock XJ should need nothing other than a good spot here and there. I have taken a bone stock, unlocked, all terrain tired XJ over this a few times in the past. As for our oil pans, it sounds like they are related, or at least seeing the same rock.:D I spoke with Alexia (the Student) last night, and gave her the info on this thread. I asked her to check it out, and post if necessary. I think that she is more interested in the culture of wheeling, but I don't see how she can do a good film without at least touching on the enviromental aspects. Its up to us to show her the difference between being an idiot, and a responsible wheeler. Brian-empty your PM mailbox.....what do you mean mabey?
Hi -- I'm the USC grad student doing the story on offroading. The piece will be shorter than the typical documentary, between 5 and 10 minutes, and yes -- I'm mostly interested in the culture of offroading but need to include some environmental aspects.
I plan to "interview" as many off-roaders as possible to learn about the culture as well as what you do to minimize environmental harm. I'll also interview someone from the other side, for balance. But MAINLY I want the piece to capture the fun, the comradery, etc. involved in offroading.
Hope you all can join us. From the pictures I've seen on the web, this could turn up some great visuals.
If any of you can't make it this weekend but would be willing to do an interview, that would be helpful as well.
Thanks!
Karnage 11-11-03, 11:03 AM Have you been up to Azusa Cyn to watch the Mud runs. Different then a lot of organized runs. If you are looking for people pulling together to help each other out. Then head up there on a sunday and watch 50-100 lifted trucks running thru the deep mud. People help each other out a lot. And besides, the guys covered in mud makes for great footage as people look on.
It is a different aspect compared to the Jeep Trail runs (which are pretty damn fun too).
People really pull together, literally often there are more trucks pulling out a single driver stuck.

how can you tell me that's not good photography? :D :D
jmbrowning 11-11-03, 10:15 PM Is there an official time and place for the Sunday tour?
In order of appearance:
Rowher
Miller
Calico
I'm up for any of the rides. If a stock XJ can tolerate the ride, the Missus may be bringing her Grocery Getter along too!
if it's calico we're most likely in. the others are pretty far for a sunday drive.

I am debating...depends on Saturday.
if it's rowher that's fine. just thought I'd offer another option. Dave, what time we meeting? where? please resend your other pm. thanks.
Qubicon 11-12-03, 01:19 PM I was thinking Rowher due to its proximity, and the fact that I haven't seen that area since the fires rolled through. I would be up for Miller, haven't been there in a while, but I think that Miller is a little tough in the beginning for a stock vehicle. Once up the first hill, its easy. I am open to either trail. I told Alexia to meet me at my house at 9:00 am on Sunday. I figure we could meet at the Rowher Flats staging area at 10:00, or be at the Flying J at 10:00-10:30. Opinions, and who's in?

Rowher seems to have gotten tougher every time i've been there, especially the first loooong hillclimb. Good news is that there is an unpaved road that meanders its way up the hill as well. Imagine the first hill at Miller, make it twice as difficult and ten times longer, and that should give you a good idea :D but, like I said, there's a bypass that goes all the way around it. We had a brand new stock Ford fullsize 4x4 truck make it up last time, remember? :D It got 2 flat tires, but it made it. edit: I meant the truck made it up the tough way, not the bypass :P

I would love to be there, but I have racing at El Mirage. If by chance it gets rained out, I'll be there. :8
jmbrowning 11-12-03, 04:39 PM We will be at the South end of the Rowher trail by 1000 on Sunday.
There are a few side loops on Sierra Pelona that are a bit more challenging, even moreso if it's muddy out. Still probably passable with a stock open diff vehicle with AT tires.
In any case, Sunday's forecast looks like showers with 62 degree highs in Santa Clarita.
Called 661-296-9710 and 626-574-1613. Angeles National Forest is open and no closures.
HTH. I will post GPS coordinates of the staging area.
Qubicon 11-12-03, 04:59 PM OK- So Rowher it is. Lets meet at the first staging area parking lot. You can take the 5 north to the 14 east, get off on Sand Canyon. Make a left off the freeway, and continue straight through the canyon. It ends at Sierra Highway. Make a right, and follow Sierra Highway to the sign for Rowher Recreation area. Make a left, and follow the dirt road to the staging area. I will be at the AM/PM on Sand Canyon at about 9:30 stocking up for the day. Sorry, we will be taking the easy way up, and not entering from Bouquet Canyon:8
jmbrowning 11-12-03, 05:15 PM So are we going South to North for this trip? If so, it should be a lot easier prob easy enough for stocker vehicles even in rain. Going downhill at the very north end of the trail may be hair raising with slick mud. Easy to bypass using the Sierra Pelona trail.
Start from Staging Area 1 means a trip south to north
STAGING AREA 1
N 34,31.600
W 118,22.962
Elevation 2546 feet

Yes, I'll need to get the interviews on camera. But don't be shy! It's actually pretty fun, and you get used to it after a few minutes.

:D :D :D
somebody at work said they saw part of it on a public access or college station at some point. I never saw it.
Qubicon 07-27-07, 05:31 PM Yes, Alexia came by and showed us the footage but we are still waiting for our copy. It was pretty cool. It was never supposed to be prime time or anything, just a college project that was going to air on public access, which it did. I just cant remember when as its been a while.
