And I got a bumper mount for about $7 at Fry's Electronics in Burbank. The CB works great on the trail, but the built in speaker was not powerful enough to hear when I was on the freeway enroute to the trail, so I also got an external speaker for $20 at Radio Shack.
Thanks Russ! I,ll give Fry,s a shot. I,m not to far from them, do you recall if they sold the antenna at Fry,s as well??
Jerry Bransford 07-02-07, 04:47 PM Fry's sells CB antennas. Stay with one that is no taller than 4' as most offroad runs and 4x4 clubs have banned anything taller for safety reason. Also make sure it has a tunable tip which makes it easier to tune the antenna. It must be tuned to the correct length to produce as much power output as possible. If you can find an inexpensive SWR meter (normally $20 or so) at Fry's, pick it up when you pick up the antenna. You use the SWR meter to tune the antenna and directions come with it on how to do that. It's easy and there's always someone here who can provide assistance if getting it tuned doesn't come easily enough. :)
Malachi 07-02-07, 07:55 PM Just another voice with advice: Get the best coax cable you can find. The most important part of your CB system is not the CB. Its actually everything from the antenna connection on the back of your CB to the tip of the antenna that provides the best signal and range.

Hey Thank,s everyone.. I,m learning so much about this offroading there is so much to it I feel like I,m back at school, only difference here is I really enjoy all of this.I went to Fry,s and got the antenna and the mount and cable, I hope I have the right antenna if not back to Fry,s Thanks all ,I,ll let ya know how things work out.Oh I also need the SWR thanks for the links....Geeb
Old Fart 07-03-07, 10:20 AM Geebo, if you can't find an SWR meter, I can loan you mine. You'd have to drive over to work (LAX) to pick it up though. My F350CC and North Hollyweird don't get along too well :)
SAR Jeeper 07-03-07, 10:28 AM Hey Geebo...I just checked Fry's web site. They show an SWR meter for $10. I'll go buy one tomorrow, and will help you install cb and antenna on Thursday. I need the SWR on mine, cuz I don't want to fry another cb!

That's the one I have! $10 from Fry's. Works great.
Hey Steve , Can we both use the same SWR??I know probably a dumb question but I,m asking because I don,t know the answer..Let me know if I need to gget one OK? thanks my freind see you Thrus..Geeb
Old Fart 07-03-07, 01:22 PM Geebo,
You can both use it - you only put it inline long enough to check/adjust SWR
Hey Jeff ,thanks for the offer of the SWR but Steve (SAR JEEPER) is going to help me out with the CB setup.Hope everyone has a good and safe 4th, (God Bless this country)..Geeb
SAR Jeeper 07-03-07, 10:39 PM Yeah, you connect it between your radio and your antenna, and it basically measures how much power is being reflected back towards the radio. You tune your antenna to the less amount of reflection, then connect the antenna coax directly to the radio. Simple. I do it with my ham stuff all the time.
Hi there,I was wondering where you all with TJ,S hook up your dc power to??I,m hoping there is a easy quick place without having to drill more.I,mm all put together except the grounding..Thank,s in advance for any suggestions...Geeb
Jerry Bransford 07-06-07, 02:06 PM To eliminate or at least greatly reduce electrical noise like from the fuel pump, any 2-way radio should be powered directly by the battery. There's a black grommet by the accelerator pedal you can drill a small hole through to pass the power wire through so it can be connected to the battery. Actually, and more convenient than the battery since it has a small stud for such connections is the power distribution center just in front of the battery. That will still give you power as pure as that on the battery itself. Snap the rear cover off (nearest the battery) and you'll see a stud with a connector from the battery under the nut. Take the nut off and attach your CB's + power lead to it. :)

If your CB + power lead doesn't have a fuse, add one.

that way it filters it out quite nice. Also, if you have a larger setup like I do then where are you going to put it? I used a ratchet strap right to the roll bar then that way its secure for going off road and easy to remove as well.

The-Hurricane 08-18-07, 10:20 PM wow i love the ratchet strap holding the cb up, thats really clever. also ive seen them mounted on that little metal bar loop on the windsheild. i use that hole for my bikini top so i cant mount there, but the soundbar would be a great spot! also a little off topic here, how is your hardtop so clean on the inside!!!

It's the outside that I cant keep clean. In my case because of the size of my radio system there is no other place I can mount this and as before noted, with the ratchet strap it comes out easy and is VERY solid when wheeling....MATT
The-Hurricane 08-19-07, 09:18 PM mines filthy, but then again i wheel in mud. that sure is a great setup, i might just steal that!
flatpoint 10-19-07, 10:19 PM Not to jump in,but I have a question; I just inst. a 75 Cobra CB, and ran the + to the fuse block,(add a circut, auto zone). Now,would you hear the diff. between "acc" and the key in the running pos?(fuel pump running)? I cant hear any diff. Did I get lucky?
