View Full Version : Tryin to settle an argument
swbooking 10-31-07, 10:25 PM OK, JimmyRig and I are tryin to settle an argument on which shocks would be best for me and for my buck and we want to see what you guys think so:
What is the best shock for your buck?
It cant be OME cause they dont make long enough shock for my application or i would have already bought them.
Post up your opinions and please only post if you have EXPERIENCE with the shock.
Thanks guys.
scherf68 10-31-07, 10:42 PM I like rancho 9000's and rubicon express monotube, have had them both on for a year or more. You can get either in multiple sizes and they both ride very nicely.
xjkevin 10-31-07, 10:55 PM it kinda depends on the money you want to spend Allen, i think bilstien 5100s are pretty good for the money, and you can get them in any size/valving you want, i have those in the rear and 5150s in the front..not so happy with the 5150s.
Perhaps you might consider Doetsch Tech's shocks?
http://www.doetsch-shocks.com/
I've used the Doetsch Tech HV-1's on the front end for about two years and their Mono-tube 2.0's on the rear for about six months now. I have been very satisfied with their products-it totally transformed the ride of the Jeep. They built units that had longer extension to match the flexability of my Rubicon 4.5" lift and easily handle the weight of MTR tires.
dirtman13 11-01-07, 09:57 AM Fox coilover conversion :D ...Seriously, I can tell you that I don’t really care for the Skyjacker shocks. I have them on all 4 corners and they are to stiff for me.
rat patrol 11-01-07, 08:28 PM Fox remote reservoir. Get 'em valved correctly and they rock! Sorry, kinda pricey. I keep forgetting I inhereted these.
FishPOET 11-01-07, 09:32 PM i think bilstien 5100s are pretty good for the money
x2....
cbrazor1 11-01-07, 09:46 PM rancho 5000 good price good shock
maddmike 11-01-07, 11:34 PM Ome
:d
Dukes69 11-02-07, 01:48 AM Fox smooth body shox. $140 a pop but it'll be the last shock you'll every buy. Completely rebuildable and revalveable.
NAILER341 11-02-07, 09:18 AM i have some fox shocks for sale. pm me if interested. used apx. 1 year.
they are 11" and 12" 2.0 emulsion shocks.
they are being replaced with coilovers, there is nothing wrong with these shocks.
YJwonderboy 11-02-07, 05:59 PM Doesn't Monroe make the Ranchos?
The 9000's fade too fast for my liking. I have Bilstein 5100's in my Tacoma, though, and they are the best shock I have ever run.

Haha!
In my honest opinion through experience, I think the Rancho 9000 is a great shock for the buck.
swbooking 11-03-07, 07:17 PM Haha!

Johnson, you have no experience 9000s besides the pair sitting in the garage, go back and work on your Asian Mobile...
looks like if i dont get Erik's Foxs, ill go with 5100s.
and not 9000s Jimmy :P
jimmyrig 11-04-07, 12:40 PM ahhh,,, good priced used fox shocks werent part of the argument...But Yeah I would be all over those.
RubiRedRoc 07 11-08-07, 07:57 AM I have the same question about best shocks, except I have a '07 JK with a Black Diamond 2" lift. I installed them just before the Poker Run and the AT shocks turned my Jeep into a Pogo Stick. HiWay ride is also terrible. Anyone have any Ideas for a proper shock. I drive Jeep everyday plus drive the desert a couple of times a week.(retired). So I need to handle both. If someone can Help I sure could use it. Thanks
jeepen_mike 11-09-07, 03:03 PM rancho 9000 or bilstein i still get paid hehehhehe
swbooking 11-09-07, 05:20 PM no you dont...
blazair 11-14-07, 01:41 PM Best for the buck is the Bilstein 5150 with 255/70 valving for all around use crawling/hauling/street.
swbooking 11-14-07, 03:41 PM see ive heard contradicting stories about 5150s some say great some say suck... I think i just gonna save up and go with some Fox 2.0 resivors. If your gonna do it might as well do it once right?
But for now im running rancho 9000XLs in the front and 5125s in the rear.
blazair 11-14-07, 06:36 PM The Bilstein 7100 is a fine shock also. Im running those on the front of my red Jeep, 5150's rear.
My white Jeep has 5150's all around.
swbooking 11-14-07, 07:43 PM yeah i have a set of 7100s that i was thinking about using but they need to be rebuilt and i need to buy the barpin eliminators all the jazz to mount them up... i might swap them in later.
blazair 11-15-07, 10:44 AM Heres what I did for the lower mount of my 7100's. I removed the Bilstein spherical bearing and used a poly bushing with the stock barpin. Has worked great so far.

xjkevin 11-15-07, 12:00 PM hey allen want to sell the 7100s, are they like my old ones, or is the body short??

swbooking 11-15-07, 07:56 PM huh i never thought about taking the bearing out and using rubber busings thats pretty sweet. Thanks for the pic. Whatd you do on the upper mount?
PMed you Kev.
blazair 11-15-07, 08:56 PM For the top I just used the typical shock adapters and the Bilstein provided spacers and washer as spacer. Shock adapters are rotated so that the clevis ears are fwd and aft of the shock.
silvergoat 11-15-07, 09:14 PM Been running Bilsteins for years never a problem as long as you get the right valving. My front 5150s are valved at 255 while my rear 7100 are valved at 275.

DirtBall89 12-22-07, 08:56 PM I ran Rancho 5000s for several years on my YJ. The ride was always very harsh. I used to say that it rode like it had square wheels.
When they finally wore out, I replaced them with a set of Rancho 9000s. Rear set on 7 front set on 5. For a leaf spring suspension, it rides pretty nice on and off road.
fun4wheelerguy 12-23-07, 10:27 PM I had Rancho 9000 shock on for atleast 10 years. I just changed to the MX6 shocks. I love the ride with the MX6. It is just night and day.
