  • Trail Preparedness

Hey guys (and gals). I want to put together a list of items that should be carried on trips in the Jeep. I know there are some variables such as you probably wouldn’t take the same items for a day trip on 3N16 as you would take on Rubicon. I’m thinking in general, when you prepare to go out what do you carry? I’m not really talking about the amount of water or trail snacks. I’m more referring to items you would pack for trail repairs.

This is a list of some things I already carry:
    Fuel pump (electric)
    U-joints
    U-joint straps
    Front axles
Electrical: Wire: 10 and 12 gauge, terminal connectors, 30-amp relay, fuses, tape
Steel putty (this stuff works) and Epoxy
    Radiator leak stop
    4 quarts of oil
    Carb cleaner
    Varies nuts & bolts
    Spare fan belt
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.
    Check out .

I'm not sure and I'll spend some time looking, I think there was a good discussion on this earlier. But a great idea to make such a list. Very helpful to me.
    Thanks,

I did search and found this which is a good list and does have a list of spare parts: http://www.myjeeprocks.com/forums/sh...ht=trail+tools
But I wanted to concentrate on breakdowns. I know about chapstick, phone, and first aid kits. If you find anything else please post it.

This will be very helpful to me. I only carry my first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, and rely on the Desert Jewel not breaking. And if she does, then I rely on the wonderful men who are Jeeping with me. "It's a Girl thing!" te-he Naw...I'm learning everything I can

One thing I've always tried to do is determine what I _can_ fix on the trail, then make sure I have the parts, tools and knowledge _to_ fix it on the trail (the Engineer in me always defaults to the "module" approach)

A good way to determine if your "module" has all it's components - do a simple part changeout in your driveway, using only the tools and parts you have on the Jeep. That's whem you'll find out valuable things, like "you need a 12 pt socket or box end to take the Dana 30 apart", or just how hard it can be to change a u-joint.

As far as parts to carry - it's highly dependant on the rig. I have a Dana 60 in the rear - I carry no spare axles for that (anything that takes the rear end out probably isn't going to be a field repair anyway). I do carry spare outer shafts for the front Dana 44 - will eventually carry spare inners - but don't worry too much about that for the SBNF, as the trails aren't likely to break those components, and I can always call for help.

FI rigs need to look at the "no starters" components, like the CPS.

You're just upset because the voices in my head only talk to ME!

not to say that anything can't happen, but a bit of preventive maintenance and regular undercarriage inspection - before you head out on the trail - goes a long way too.

also depends greatly on your rig and what parts you really think you're going to break, and if broken would leave you powerless or unable to "limp" out of the trail.

This is always an interesting topic, and one that should be paid attention to. I used to be one of the most prepared rigs on the trail, but over the last year and a half, I have gotten lazy, and it has bitten me a couple times.

Last weekend I had to leave my Jeep on the trail overnight because I broke the rear end BAD and couldn't get it to move. I forgot my bottle jack, high lift, and pry bar, which would have gotten me off the trail that night instead of the next day, when we had to go to Wal-Mart and buy supplies. You can bet my trail loadout will be back up to spec before I go out again.

Just for reference, here's my list of things that I would NORMALLY carry:

I have used every single item on this list at one time or another.

                  In no particular order:

                  Baby Sledge
                  12v. Drop Light
                  Work Blanket
                  Spare D44 hub
                  Mini Toolkit

                  Full Toolkit

                  Assorted pliers
                  Adjustable Wrench

                  Safety Seal Tire Plug kit

I couldn't agree with you more. I defiantly spend more time maintaining my Jeep then I do driving it. I think it might be kind of a sickness. Thanks.

Now that's a list. :thumbs_up I carry so much in my rig that the rear springs are beginning to sag. My buddies give me grief because I carry so much. That was until I saved some of them from having to leave their rig on the trail. I would hate to have to leave my Jeep on the trail. So I try to carry what I can. Thanks for the list. It's a good one.

Most auto parts suppliers carry it. I bought mine at Kragen and you'll find it by the JB weld, silicones, and other adhesives. I can’t recall the exact name but it comes in a plastic tube that is used to keep it from drying out.
