Speedometer recalibration

    Speedometer recalibration

    Hi everyone, i was reading up on how to recalibrate the speedometer, but i only found 1 link and wasnt too clear on my options. So i appologize if i ask the same question again...

    I just installed a SYE, CV driveshaft 4.5" RESF lift, 33" of rubber and 4.56 gears. The speedometer is completely wrong. good thing for me its actually showing faster. 85MPH on speedometer = 75MPH on GPS. I went and purchased a 39 tooth speedo gear but found out that with the SYE, they got rid of the mechanical gears and installed the magnetic one (i think).

    Now that you have an idea of what my rig looks like and has, here is my question:

    What are my options for recalibrating my speedometer? So far i saw 2 products:

    1) Dakota Digital (SGI-5) $80

    2) Superlift TruSpeed Speedometer Recalibration $190

    are any of these products good or bad and if anyone knows of another solution, what and where is it available? I thank you guys for all the help and i appologize for the loooooooong post. I just want to make sure i explained it all...

    Your correct, its a magnetic read... I am in process of doing the same thing you are. Give me a day here to get what I am looking at...posted.

      thanks for the response... i checked with the dealer and they said that they can reprogram the wrangler's chip with the correct tire size and axle ratio... Im not sure why modern programmers wont do it, but the dealer ship will do it for about $80...

      Lemme know if anyone finds any better

        You two must have the jb super short SYE... if I've read everything correctly, the regular SYE kits (advance adapters, re) still use a mechanical speedo gear... the SUPER short SYE kit does not...
        If we aren't supposed to eat animals, then why are they made out of meat?

          I am struggling to understand this....still. Yes, I have the ESS221, which is the extreme super short shaft, which has the ring for the magnetic sensor pick up. No problem for the 05 TJ. Just where the adjustment can be made or with what added electrical box to correct all the computer control components I am still in research with. Teraflex is the shaft maker from Utah. I would have thought Teraflex would have a recommendation or the component needed.

          Matt, where are you getting your input?
          Just like my luck to have something unique. Just switching a gear would be soooo much easier.....

            I haven't installed my SYE (regular, not super short) yet, but it still uses the little gear. I'll see what info I can find for you on what to use!

                  Usually the things I post are a little harder to find, and come from a lot of poking around, but these ones were more from just a simple little googling! Hope it helps!

                    Thanks for all the info guys... I wanted to add a little bit of information out there too... I went to the dealer and tried to have the corresponding control unit reprogrammed, unfortunately Jeep didn't think that we would upgrade their wranglers :confused: (what where they thinking) and thus you cannot reprogram it for new gear/tire sizes.

                    So after doing some research, and asking around. I found out that the dakota digital speedo calibrator is not as precise as the SuperLift truespeed. Also, the Superlift module allows you to calibrate your speedo with the turn of a special key instead of DIP switches. Thridly, the Superlift unit has 2 configs you can choose from by simply flicking a switch. This would allow you to run two different sets of tires without having to recalibrate the unit every single time.

                    Installation takes roughly the same amount of time for both units and the instructions are fairly straight forward (once you pass all the "small print").

                    As an end result, i purchased the SuperLift true speed and will have it installed by the next wednesday... If anyone is interested i can post my thoughts and opinions of the unit once its done (as in accuracy and the like)

                        Great info! Good stuff to know! I didn't do as much looking into it since I don't have a problem, and I don't plan on doing the super-short SYE, the regular SYE will be fine for my 2-1/2" OME lift and tummy tuck, which is probably the biggest I'll ever go.

                          I have the dakoda stuff in my jeep, a bit of a pain to install lots of wires, but it seems to work just fine
                          The Second Amendment protects all the rest!
